#HomeNetwork

Been trying to improve my home network recently. Just bought a Gigabit switch and migrated most of my network devices to a wired connection (it's just more stable that way and I get the bonus of improved bandwidth). I just discovered the rabbit hole of self-hosted solutions for common subscription-based services. Thinking of getting a NAS capable of running Docker next. *excited* #homenetwork

Little USB powered mini metal fan lowered the router temp from 142°F to 127°F -15°F (61°C to 53°C -8°C) in half an hour!

I found this locally for a steal. It's the start of my little home network. Maybe it isn't the best switch but it's a start! Right now, I just have a 50ft Cat6 running through my house to the PC 😆.

My Asus wifi router randomly crashed and now I'm paranoid and wondering if I should replace it (it's several years old and wifi 6, otherwise works fine).

Curious about mesh systems. Are the Eero systems reputable or should I look into something from, say, ubiquity?

OK, For the last 3 hours I have picked a fight with two wireless APs, a router and a printer. In all I think I might have won!

- Managed to get the Mac Mini to recognise my printer has a built in scanner again.
- Managed to make the scanner software realise I was scanning in A4 and not Foolscap
- I think I may have fixed an issue with the router kicking things off the 5Ghz Wifi and back to 2.4ghz over time.

It also helps to remember you have a second access point to deal with legacy devices that don't play nice with a Mikrotik.

Found this thread on reddit pretty useful.

Isn’t home networking fun? :D

Your TP-Link router might be on the chopping block. The popular brand faces a potential US ban due to alleged China ties, security risks, and unfair competition. Millions could be affected. Stay tuned.

Years ago, I switched our little Linksys/Cisco router out for a RaspberryPi configured as a firewall/router. I noticed an immediate jump in the speed of my home network. It also allowed me to set up scripts to automatically block our kids' internet access during certain hours, and a lot of other neat capabilities that simply aren't possible with most out-of-the-box routers.

I've been upgrading RPis as they are released.

Wanted to update my Omada controller. It usually is a simple task. Not this time, I found out I also need to update the MongoDB and Java version. And I'm running into issues at step 1.

Considering to completely rebuild the LXC container. Even though I can't find instructions that include all the latest dependencies.

Fun Saturday ahead.

Getting slightly annoyed with my Unifi setup which seems to be having issues. Today it’s blocking my access to coredns.io for no obvious reason. Works fine connecting when outside the unifi network. #unifi #ubiquiti #homenetwork

What would be a sensible step up from running my local network stuff on Raspberry Pi devices? Thinking an old mini desktop machine with proxmox to run a few bits separately? #homenetwork #proxmox #homelab

Seems to be my unplanned update and patch Sunday. 😅

Updated my Gitlab CE instance running as container in Proxmox to the latest version: about.gitlab.com/releases/2025

Worked without any issues! ✌🏻

Anyone with issues using Google Chrome and resolving local DNS hosts at your home network? Does Chrome use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and queries its public Google servers by default? 🤔

It‘s always DNS… 🤬

Any experiences? 🙏🏻

Finally I was able to discover my #Docker #containers automatically as services on my #gethomepage deployment. The issue was pretty simple and a stupid one in the end. 🫣 Running the homepage container as root when using Docker socket directly solved it. It is mentioned in the documentation, but I overlooked it for some reason. 🙄

I‘m still excited for the widget. Need to dig into building customized widgets. Anyone experiences?

Created an overview of the devices and apps running in my home network with #gethomepage. It looks also pretty neat on mobile device and I really lime the available widgets. #homenetwork #proxmox #gitlab #pihole

Just enabled internet traffic flow visualization in UniFi UI. And the winners of the most constant traffic flows are (except, obviously, my macbook): the vacuum cleaner, the printer, and the air purifier. That's some crazy shit.

Job done. 9 x 80mm holes cut in the ply at the back for cables and ventilation.

Top drawer contains power board, router, an old Mac Mini running AdGuard Home, Tapo T315 Temperature and Humidity Monitor.

Bottom drawer contains 4-port Netgear switch, Fingbox, Tapo H200 hub, Home Assistant Green.

Under desk no longer a dusty trip hazard. Just Starlink cable, power for monitor, Belkin Qi2 charger, and MacBook Pro, and TP-Link AV1300 3-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerline base station.

This could likely have been done much better, but this cost me nothing except 2 hours of my time.
