Visual variable (Cartography 🗺️)

A visual variable, in cartographic design, graphic design, and data visualization, is an aspect of a graphical object that can visually differentiate it from other objects, and can be controlled during the design process. The concept was first systematized by Jacques Bertin, a French cartographer and graphic designer, and published in his 1967...

Little write-up for the next FIMS newsletter. I meant to mention the Hawthorn (part of my research project) excerpt that will be published oops 😳 I suppose I can mention it when it comes out.

Leah Brown's (Ph.D. LIS) visualization entry for the 2023 Information Is Beautiful Awards, "101 Derivatives of French Mother Sauces" was selected for this year's longlist in the category Arts, Entertainment & Culture. Led by data journalist David McCandless, the 11B Awards are organized by the Data Visualization Society (DVS) and judged by a panel of data visualization experts and public vote. Entrants for the Awards compete from around the world as individuals, teams, studios, or departments from within organizations such as Reuters, AP, USA Today, Harvard, MIT, World Bank, and other international and government bodies. https://www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/showcase/6229- 101-derivatives-of-french-mother-sauces 101 Derivatives of French 3 Mother Sauces i e A reference infographic that visually = organizes 101 derivatives across 6 leading sauce categories from s French cuisine. Here we go! Prints will go on sale after the competition wraps up, in case they're of interest.

The best part of doing this is now I want to try making every sauce at some point 😅🤞

Two final versions of my infographic: 101 Derivatives of French Mother Sauces. The first version is in a magenta palette, the second version is in a slate blue palette. Each version contains 101 sauce derivatives presented in a periodic table format. The last image is of my entry confirmation to the Information Is Beautiful Awards

Infographic WIP: 101 Derivatives of French Mother Sauces.

There are 101 "elements" now. I just have to input the last of the ingredient revisions (some sauces have ingredients but they are placeholders), proof it, then it's done.

The last draft version of my infographic: 101 Derivatives of French Mother Sauces. This infographic presents a sample of common sauces organized like a periodic table. Designed and researched by me, Leah Brown, 2023.

Having a hard time tonight so I'll finish the ingredient revisions tomorrow. I think I will cut it off at 77, adding more at this point will sacrifice the readability.

[Infographic]: Unweaving the Textured Light of a Supermassive Black Hole (v 1.0)

This one was really fascinating, fun, and honestly moving. Are you an astrophysicist? What did I get wrong? Yell at me in the comments or DMs!

In the meantime, enjoy the beauty of the universe!

Drumming insight out of data. All #datascientists want to do that, of course, but more generally, scientists want to do that. Like these chemists at East Carolina University using #data #sonification and these stock market analysts using #Chernoff faces for #DataVisualization #informationvisualization and data reduction.

Did I mention this is part of an article in an Apple II magazine from 1986?

"There always have been too much data"

Everyone says and thinks Avatar, right? But, as ever, it depends on how you look at it. @infobeautiful@tweet.pasture.moe took a deep data dive and found some surprising, even horrifying answers

The dark mode version of my infographic, which is actually Witch Mode, because information wants to be goth. Most people don't know this, but it's true.

My submission for this year's World Data Visualization Prize in the static category is an infographic of changes across six sectors for the years 2010-2020. I started this one so late that instead of really worrying about it, I just decided to do something weird with a timeline by not doing a timeline! Did I do the right design? No! But I did it anyway because I'm not making good choices this month! 😩

So this year I wanted to commit to working more on visualizations than I have been able to the last couple of years and I'm really excited to show you something I'm working on soon. It's fun and practical and deeply personal and I think you'll like it! #informationvisualization #infographic #UIdesign #dataviz
