#KDEPIM

@ervin, I see you’ve been at #Akademy and held a #KDEPIM BoF.

There was a topic on how to gather more info from users.

As an avid user of #KMail, #KOrganizer and #Zanshin, I have (quite) some feedback and bug reports to provide. But whenever I try to, it seems to end up in the void.

I think a first step would be concentrate on the number of communication channels that devs can actually manage. For both their sanity and the users’.

#KDE has long had a technology called #KParts. Basically you can set up something (including a full app) as a #KPart component and use it elsewhere as part of another (tools bars and menus will merge).

My understanding is that #Kate & #KWrite are a good example. Both now use the same editor component, but Kate adds a LOT of extra functionality to it. The #KDEPIM suite uses the same trick with it's components - they can run separately or as one combined app (#Kontact).

I'm not fully across the technology, so if any experts wish to correct me, feel free. 🤠

#KDEPIM 24.12.2 uploaded to #DebianUnstable. The plan is to ship #Trixie with 24.12.3 which will be released in March.

#Qt 6.8.2 is packaged in #Debian Experimental and will hopefully be uploaded to Unstable soon to make it into Trixie.

@benlk I use #kmail since I can remember, with the exception of the time when they were fighting getting #akonadi to work - which it does since many years at this point of course. A workhorse of my life :)

Today was my last day on #KDE #akademy , so here are some personal highlights regarding #kdepim

▶️ #akonadi resources in #rust are now closer to reality
▶️ Akonadi Resource for Outlook/Microsoft365 is being worked on (in Rust :rust_ferris: !!)
▶️ We have a dedicated EWS server for testing, expect bugfixes!

It was amazing being on Akademy again after 5 years and seeing all my KDE friends. Thanks everyone for a great Akademy and see you next year :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

ok so renaming a folder (with something like nextcloud) doesn't sync properly to akonadi- I do not know why or how... or where to report this... someone help?

I like std::chrono, it's so much nicer to write setTimeout(30s) than setTimeout(30 * 1000), particularly when the code base uses a mix of magic values in seconds, milliseconds or minutes.

I just wrote about the last #KDE
PIM sprint in Toulouse. It was again a super productive sprint even though the many food pics might give another impression. But sugar is important for the brain (or so I heard) !

A nice side effect of the #KDE PIM sprint is that there is now a migration paths from KNotes to Marknote. It will allow us to archive KNotes and all the infrastructure behind it while making sure that your don't loose your notes and can use a nice and maintained app instead.

Nothing working there, but at least I know the -addons load correctly in . :)

@joepie91 #kmail #kdepim is massively underrated in my opinion.

It is a blazingly fast (copes well with with >10k mails per folder), well-integrated (w/ support for groupware features) mail client. Out-of-the-box support for GPG (using the system GPG implementation) and S/MIME (for whoever needs to suffer that).

Except one thing (KDE Bug#373040), which is that it does break long URLs when composing in plaintext mode, something Thunderbird *does* get right. Can't have everything I guess.

Before kmail, I used Thunderbird (for more than a decade, but I needed something which worked well with a HiDPI factor of 1.5 in the year 2016) and Evolution (tried it briefly, it broke my inbox by duplicating half my mail, never going to touch that ever again).

@climbertobby I was using before moving my emailing to
.
I want to add that while it does look like things don't change, there's much work going on
in the background of KDEPIM. Both newer efforts and the older Kontact suite use the same
underlying set of infrastructure.
Part of KDEPIM (only KCalCore so far) even runs on .

Big shout & thanks to @kde, especially the #kdepim team!

Last time I did tried out #kdeitinary (>1.5 years) importing my travel ticket ticket did not work.

Today it was as easy as:
Send the PDF to the phone with #kdeconnect & then select the most recent file in the #ideitinary import dialogue.

Looking forward to test performance during the trip.

I hope the conductor will accept the code & not kick me out as blind passenger ;-)

@ArneBab I mean this complexity is also hurting / themselves:
reddit.com/r/kde/comments/cpsg

"Akonadi on the other end, has no people committing regularily, because it has a very complicated architecture, consisting of multiple processes."

So looks like some "software architecture" wonks came, saw , decided to fsck it up with their fantastic ideas (effectively making it both unusable and impossible to support), and went away, like locust.

Do I care to check the committers?
