TIL that #Kenner, #Louisiana was originally called Cannes Brûlées, meaning burnt sugarcane. The French pronunciation is /kan bɾyle/ whereas Kenner is /kɛn əɹ/. It's hard to say what happened to the adjective as it was anglicized, but the sugarcane was preserved pretty well in there.

(Got this from the list of #colonial censuses in Zitomersky (1974) that has one for "Cannes Bruslees" in 1722.)

I had no idea that, in #French, #DarthVader is called #DarkVador. It makes sense as both /θ/ and syllabic /ɹ/ would be difficult in French, but for a second I sort of took offense to the name change, lol

I don't speak #German, but I understand very well what the announcer says at 0:46: "Kabayel ist in top form."

I've previously posted about how much #English is used by announcers in #boxing in the Philippines, but I was not expected to hear this happen in #Germany, at least not for a phrase like this. Perhaps "knockout" or "round", common #nouns of a technical nature, but here we have a simple phrase.

"#Nonpareils" here is #English "#sprinkles". I was only familiar with "sprinkles" and "#jimmies" (in the NE).

In #French, I didn't have a word for sprinkles at all, so I guess it's "nonpareils" or, according to the dictionary, "#vermicelles", but there doesn't seem to be a word in #LouisianaFrench.

(Relatedly, #paintedbuntings are called "#passerins nonpareils" or "#Papes de #Louisiane" in #StandardFrench and simply "Papes" in #Louisiana.)

The last couple episodes of #FeartheWalkingDead have Victor #codeswitching between #English and #German a lot with his new family. Plot-wise, it seems meant to drive home the idea that he's trying to create a new identity, but #linguistics -wise, there's no rhyme or reason to when the switches happen. They argue in both, get sentimental in both, make plans in both, etc.

In the current season of #BigMouth, "The International Show" episode has a segment in #Kenya. It appears that they speak #Sheng during this portion, apparently a heavy mixture of #Swahili and #English, though I don't know this language and tried to deduce what was being spoken. I'm curious how accurate this was: the actors were #Kenyan but the #codeswitching was frequently intersentential rather than intrasentential as I could understand a lot of it.

#Gamer talk in #French is a really great way to find ample #borrowing and #codeswitching. Sometimes, almost every other noun will be English even if there is a clear #translation (e.g., #any% when taking about #speedruns).

Also, why do #Klingons learn #English? They're one of the only races that sometimes speak don't speak English in the presence of other races, so they're not relying on a #universaltranslator when appearing to speak English.

Spotted "inventor extraordinary" rather than "inventor extraordinaire" in #Spiderman c1965. I was quite surprised to see there was a shift to the latter in American #literature and that it was relatively recent (books.google.com/ngrams/graph?). Interesting case of #syntactic #borrowing where the #lexical borrowing lagged behind the post-nominal placement.
