And in Kersey, Colo., officials had to hope the government would unfreeze money to remove an old grain elevator covered in #asbestos, a cancer-causing substance that's linked to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans every year.

"'We wouldn't be able to move forward without it,' Susie Thielbert, a grant analyst for Kersey, told Colorado Public Radio about the grain-elevator project. 'We are a very small community.'"

Since I first came to be interested in ghost signs, and their longevity, I've always heard the refrain that this was due to the lead in the paint. However, while not doubting the truth of the claim, I'd never received a satisfactory explanation for why that might be the case. Until now.

In a casual conversation with the sign painter Jill Strong, she let slip that she has a PhD in polymer photochemistry. I didn't hesitate to put the lead question directly to her, resulting in this in-depth exploration of the material, its properties and, of course, the major hazards associated with it.

Renovations on my office have slammed to a halt. After removing a bit of wallpaper and testing the walls I have come across lead paint.

I'm devastated.

I've really been loving how the room looks with just a fraction of the wallpaper gone, and I was really looking forward to the mass reduction of pastel and pastoral flowers in my most used space. Unfortunately progress is going to take a step backwards while I do some research and figure out who to hire in Ontario to do some lead abatement for me.

@MagicTony I haven't seen the film, but one can find similar patterns of #denialism by industries going back into the first half of the 20th century: the #lead paint industry and the #asbestos industry knew about the hazards then but continued a denialist campaign for decades later. The tobacco-cancer link was firmly established in the 1950s, the industry continued the denialism campaign into the 1990s.
