Regresé a este libro de relatos hace unos meses para preparar uno de los últimos programas de @ficciopatas del año. Así, para el episodio 14 de la tercera y última temporada, decidí llevar el relato «El rey de los elfos» a la mesa de disección. Escogí este relato de entre los 19 que componen la antología porque nos permitía explorar el modo en que el autor irlandés abordaba un tópico muy manido y lo deformaba para adaptarlo al terror, haciendo del relato un cuento de hadas oscuro.
Y es que todos los relatos de «Nocturnos», en mayor o menor medida, son así o peor. Peor, entiéndaseme, en el buen sentido. Y para mí, que había demorado el final de esta relectura para el tiempo de verano, ha sido muy refrescante, pues al autor lo tenía más leído de sus novelas de Charlie Parker, un detective poco convencional, con un pasado turbio y un contacto con lo sobrenatural que le dan un plus (a mí parecer) a sus historias y las tramas que desarrolla. Si bien, hay que decir, su narrativa en ocasiones resulta densa, no es para nada despreciable. [...]
Yo creo que son relatos cortos muy disfrutables. Algunos más que otros, todo hay que decirlo. Yo no voy a dejar de recomendarlo. Me gustan sus finales insatisfactorios y brutales, el triunfo del mal o el fracaso de la inocencia sin justificación, porque, al fin y al cabo, de eso va el terror, de incomodar y colocar al lector en un punto de desasosiego vulnerable y frágil. Para mí, muy recomendable. [...]
