How many times have you heard the phrase "Eh, old cars need too much maintenance..."?

Now, I'm no mechanic (or, atleast, all I know is self-taught) and still I find myself constantly leaving 1-star ratings to all the men that I mistakenly happen to leave my 18 years old car to.

Of the 5 times it happened in these 4 years, 3 out of 5 I found the car in the worst shape possible, volunteerily sabotaged to create new problems.

Now, we're talking about a very sturdy engine. A diesel, and on top of that a very sturdy diesel (1.6 HDI), so most of the things that happen to it are "easily" fixable.

However, if you have an old car, be sure to always have a general understanding of how things were in your car before going to the mechanic. Take pictures. Ask what they've touched and done.

It's not like all of the mechanics are scammers, but even if you find mechanic-dedicated web spaces, you'll notice there is a tendency to decide what's best for yourself and your car instead of doing their job 🙂

The pics are what I found in my engine 3 weeks after going to the mechanic. Everything was loosened and a whole exhaust tube wasn't even fitted at all.

And yes. The car kept going. And I just fixed most of the errors that came up.

This weekend's fustration:

I placed my new milling machine on it's table. I can now it out and do a few test cuts. However I forgot that the first owner of the machine (the second owner never used it) was terrible in machine skills and maintance.

So que me wanting to do a test cut and discover that the clutch for the worm-gear lowering mechanism was slipping. Taking the clutch out I discovered someone coated it with way-oil that turned into a sticky but slippery mess. So before i could do a test cut; I had to take the whole stock lowering mechanism appart to clean it and re lube the parts that need oil.

Close up of the quill feed axle. This axle holds both the Fine quill feed (works via an worm gearing) and the large course guill feed that is mounted dirrectly on the axle.

The quill feed mechanism disassembled for cleaning. Shown to the right is the course quill feed with the three handles and the first part of the conical clutch. This handle dirrectly drives quill axle dirrectly via an key drive. In the middle is the worm-gear sproket that is driven by the worm gear and moves freely over the quill axle. This sproket has the second part of the conical clutch. To the left is the fine quil feed housing with wormgearing. This drives the sproket and holds it in place.

The way the fine quill feed works: The course quill feed (on the right) drives the quill. With an hand screw you force the course quill feed handle into the sproket of the worm-gear. This enables to clutch with friction. Now you can drive the quill with the fine adjustment. To drive the quill with the course adjustment you need to unscrew the clutch. This way the sproket rotates freely over the quill axle/shaft and the course wheel is no longer linked to the fine feed mechanism.
