🗺️ Historical context matters! In 17th Century Tottenville History Comes Alive, I explore how this community connects to broader historical movements.

This perspective transforms dates and facts into human experiences that readers can connect with emotionally.

I am in the mood for a good, detailed microhistory on some random topic. In the past I have read books on the history of salt, the color blue, Dutch tulips, where do clothing donations actually go, soccer and it's historical relationship to global politics, history of the alphabet, etc.

So, watcha got for me?

I need a new book.

I fancy myself an amateur historian, but do have an adv degree in education and substantial nonfiction writing experience. Prefer to work with someone whose field is #MedievalAfrica.

That artist Gill gave a supper for friends before leaving on Horrocks' 1846 expedition is, in itself, a small story. It involved just a few people and Gill had only modest social recognition. So it's odd the event was treated with such a lengthy newspaper report.

My new narrative article features Australia's first camel, a dubious newspaper reporter and unidentified expeditioners.

I've been somewhat quiet these last few weeks as there were things to do... Yesterday, I finally presented my on to the faculty at @unibwm.

Was warfare in the era of "cabinet warfare" and becoming more humane? A inquiry reveals that the practices of siege warfare remained horrendous (as they still are!), but also that sensibilities for this suffering were raised - and even voiced by practitioners of war.

Here's a public talk I gave on my masters thesis, "Deepening: Place Relationship in the Valley of Lake Creek, Oregon," during my defense. It's an ethnography of place, involving mythology, archaeology, history and ethnographic interviews. (Think of it as a 45-minute podcast ep.) Fun!

A recent NYT article about tracing family history from old photos (nytimes.com/interactive/2022/1) reminded me of this, and my wife pointed me to the #MicroHistory tag.

I'm realizing that most of the #OaklandHistory research I do is of this form, focusing on a single person (or family) or event or even a photo.

But part of the fun of having the Oakland Wiki to collect these assorted pieces is that eventually the pieces start to fit together. oaklandwiki.org/George_Turner

#Histodons: Can you share links or other resources for the process of writing #microhistory? I'm working on a #Quaker #reparations #history project for my Meeting and and would like to begin sharing some of the stories using this approach. A Google search hasn't gotten me any truly helpful writing guides, yet. Any recommendations are truly appreciated.
