Oh yeah, here’s the project I’ve been working on :) a lil Girl Scout cookie booth AAC board for nonspeaking kids, kids with apraxia of speech, kids with selective mutism, or even Deaf/HoH kids who want a backup option to sign or speech.

A lot of folks realized that the sale side helps Deaf/HoH folks order, and a few more requested a translation to Spanish and Hindi for their customer base that speak those languages. An adaptive communication “board” that can be printed to use to sell Girl Scout cookies. The right side has a cookie menu with names, pictures and descriptions of each cookie, with the name color matching the cookie’s box color. The top says “would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?”. Below the menu are numbers 1 through 12 in alternating colors for ease of eye tracking, and the words “How Many?”. To the left are boxes with phrases and matching pictographs to help quickly identify without reading every single time: yes, no, cash, card, tap (with phone), can you say that again?, would you like a bag?, and my leaders can help you.

Extremely excited for the #AsIAm conference on 5th October in #Dublin, and the fact that I am speaking at it in a breakout room, and the bigger fact that Fiacre Ryan the #NonSpeaking poet is doing a KeyNote Speech (using #AAC). I adore his book "Speechless"

Just want to share this:

I've been writing about #Autistic communication for my book out next year, and have approached a number of #NonSpeaking autistic adults and #AAC Users for sensitivity reading and for help.

Everyone has been more than helpful; so kind, so supportive, and generally wonderful. I have learnt so so much, and hope for a day that the #NonSpeakingAutistic voice is widely included in all things about autism, and stops being ignored.

I learned about https://communication4all.org listening to Elizabeth Bonker interviewed on the Uniquely Human podcast today. I love that there is a group focused on raising up non-speakers and challenging the industrial hegemony focused on oppressing them.

Went to dinner last night with chosen family. We had good food, a lovely view of several trains passing by, and the waitstaff all used she/her for me the whole night. They even had extra opportunity to use my pronouns because I was non-speaking so they had to check with my partner about my needs. Even though it's happening more regularly, I still get that bubbly feeling, and I hope it never goes away. #ActuallyAutistic #NonSpeaking #TransJoy

Finally finding loads of information, articles, and people to answer questions, on both #NonSpeaking communication in #Autism, and the use of #AAC (Augmented and Alternative Communivation) for both speaking and non-speaking #ActuallyAutistic adults.

This is making me do lots of happy dances as I can now see this section of my book taking shape 🎉
