Predator’s Pause

I originally thought the insect in this image was a dragonfly, but now I suspect it’s probably a grasshopper. Either way, it clearly caught the attention of this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). They seem to be getting along quite well—though, to be fair, that’s probably only true from the mockingbird’s perspective.

#NorthernMockingbird

"The image captures a striking moment in nature—a northern mockingbird poised proudly with a captured insect, likely a grasshopper, clutched in its slender, slightly hooked beak. The bird stands tall, its feathers sleek and streamlined, with pale gray plumage subtly dappled in lighter tones and delicate streaks. There’s a gleam in its dark eye, reflecting both instinct and triumph.

The grasshopper’s legs are visibly braced against a thick, rustic dead branch—a soft blur of spindly texture set against the sharp definition of the bird’s beak. Behind them, a gentle wash of slightly defocused foliage in earthy greens and browns sets the background, drawing all attention to the mockingbird’s crisp silhouette and its freshly caught prize.

It’s a freeze-frame of precision and instinct—quiet, still, yet pulsing with the energy of survival and grace." - Copilot with edits

Looking Out on the Realm

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are known for their fierce territorial instincts. This individual perches atop a young pine, keenly surveying the landscape below—perhaps watching for intruders, or scanning for an unsuspecting insect stirred by the wind.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

"At the crown of a young pine, a northern mockingbird perches with quiet poise, its slender frame cloaked in soft gray plumage that lightens to a cloudlike white along its underparts. Dark wings, crisply edged in white bars, fold neatly at its sides, while its long tail lifts ever so slightly, as if poised to balance on an unseen breeze. It faces right, beak angled forward—not aggressively, but with quiet intent—as though it’s listening for a distant note or surveying the horizon for its next watchpoint.

All around, the pine’s needles shimmer deep green and fine, stirred gently by the wind, with a few small cones nestled like punctuation in the branches. Behind this sentinel, the sky stretches pale and flawless, a wash of delicate blue undisturbed by cloud or clutter. In that serene frame, the bird becomes both presence and pause—a quiet monarch in a kingdom of air and whispering green." - Copilot

Songbird on a Wire

I always bring my camera on my walks, ready for whatever the morning reveals. Today, I spotted the usual bluebirds and mockingbirds perched on the power lines, their silhouettes crisscrossing the route. Across the highway, a northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) caught my eye, and I managed to capture it mid-song—perhaps offering a playful mockery as we trudged down the road.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"This image captures a northern mockingbird perched gracefully on a wire, mid-song. Its light gray and brown plumage is soft yet defined, contrasting with the darker tones of its wings and tail feathers. The bird’s beak is open wide, as if pouring its melody into the air. Its body is balanced, poised in a way that suggests both energy and ease. The blurred background isolates the bird, making it the undeniable focus, amplifying the sense of movement in its vocal performance. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

23 May 2025

As I take my first few sips of coffee, trying to wake up, my mind slowly comes alive.

When I was in the Army, I once heard someone say, "I'm too drunk to read a map—I better drive." Fortunately, nothing tragic came of it, but the risk was undeniable. Every day, millions of people get behind the wheel after drinking, convinced they’re fine to make it home. Some even rationalize that they drive better after a few drinks—they don’t. The consequences go far beyond a ticket or a lost license; they endanger lives. At worst, vehicular homicide can occur—an offense that, in Louisiana, carries 5 to 30 years in prison along with hefty fines. Worse yet, they might not survive their own recklessness.

Don't drink and drive.

"If you drink, don’t drive. Don’t even putt." – Dean Martin

Lifeless Branch, Living Bird

"This image captures the stark beauty of nature with the bare branches of a tree stretching against a clear, light blue sky. Perched at the very end of the largest branch is a northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), standing alert and facing to the right. The contrast between the lifeless tree and the lively bird adds a quiet yet powerful visual narrative. The Northern Mockingbird pair are mostly absent from their nest. I guess the ambient temperature is warm enough that they don’t feel the need to lay on the eggs?

Fluffy Mockingbird

Perched atop a white fence with a dense forest as its backdrop, this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) appears charming at first glance. However, its puffed-up feathers likely serve a purpose beyond aesthetics—an attempt to make itself look larger, possibly issuing a silent warning to another bird nearby. Its posture suggests a moment of territorial assertion rather than simple relaxation, a subtle display of dominance in the avian world.

"This northern mockingbird sits with a regal posture, its feathers puffed up like a tiny, determined ball of fluff. Its plumage is a blend of soft gray and white, with darker streaks adding definition to its wings and back. The bird's throat and belly are a lighter shade, almost glowing against its more shadowed upper body.

Its beak is slightly ajar, as if caught mid-song or mid-thought, giving it an air of alertness. The tail is stretched behind it, a sleek counterbalance to its rounded form. The puffed-up feathers make it appear both sturdy and delicate—each individual plume slightly raised, creating a textured, layered look.

The backdrop is a soft blur of greens and browns, hinting at an outdoor setting filled with foliage. The bird itself rests on a simple white surface, possibly a fence or railing, which contrasts starkly with the natural tones behind it. In this moment, the mockingbird seems entirely in control of its space, perched with confidence—perhaps surveying its surroundings, perhaps preparing to break into the elaborate song it's known for. There's something quietly dignified about its stance, like a small guardian of its domain." - Copilot

Predator

I’m not sure what species of dragonfly this is, but it certainly caught the attention of the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). From the mockingbird’s perspective, their interaction seems to be going quite well!

"The Northern Mockingbird enjoys making its presence known. It usually sits conspicuously on high vegetation, fences, eaves, or telephone wires, or runs and hops along the ground. Found alone or in pairs throughout the year, mockingbirds aggressively chase off intruders on their territory." - allaboutbirds.org

Mockingbird Sunset

This photograph captures a northern mockingbird perched on a powerline, proudly showcasing its grasshopper catch. Taken at dusk, the warm orange hues of the background add a unique and captivating touch. The image is almost a silhouette yet retains enough detail to bring the scene to life. I don’t upload all the photos I share here to my Pixels gallery. I only post my personal favorites, while some don’t make the cut. I usually give myself a couple of days to decide how I feel about them before uploading.
