I'm reading Timothy Duguid 2021 on how to handle awkward scoring in early modern psalmody and bumped into the above observation, which was new to me. The music wasn't "too high" -- the voices were different than ours.

Plausible but startling.

But at the end of the day, I'm on team "automatically shifted octaves as necessary."
