One of these days, I'll remember to ask chip companies why they aren't building more memory fabs.

There is an old clip from the BBC where they talk about the future of computing.
I find it quite striking how much he got right. I also find the differences between what he said and what came - like how he predicted that we'd book tickets, paper tickets rather than barcodes accessible from a server on a mini pc in our pocket.
The most fascinating thing for me however is that his prediction was that people wouldn't have a computer at home but they would have a terminal to access one remotely.
While he it seems to turn out he was actually right, I bet that most people in the west did get computers just to synthetically priced out of ownership by big corporations to make it easier to spy on people and because it is more profitable for them to rent out computing..
Why would they lower the ram prices once the shortage is over (at the soonest predicted 2030)?

Data centers are predicted to utilize approximately 70% of all memory chips produced by 2026, according to Tom's Hardware.
This could result in a significant RAM scarcity, potentially escalating costs and causing supply challenges for PCs, smartphones, vehicles, and everyday gadgets globally.
[…continued] Consumers and businesses will purchase computing services (those who can afford it), which is yet another example of the ominous "own nothing and be happy" prediction made at the WEF ten years ago. At that point, it would not be surprising if users were required to pay premium fees to prevent their content being used by their service providers for their commercial AI applications. #AI #digitalfreedom #digitalsovereignty #ramshortage
I went for the worst luck to the best luck. It has been a while since I saw a memtest fail report (at least 15 years) and my wallet started shivering. But luckily I checked the warranty and the memory DRAM is only 1 year old. Now let's see what says the shop.

AI PCs aren't selling, and Microsoft's PC partners are scrambling
Microslop has gone all-in with its plans to turn the Windows PC into an AI-powered 'agentic OS.' But at least one PC maker says consumers aren't buying the Copilot hype.

⚠️ The AI boom is coming for your next console!
Analysts warn a massive RAM shortage could hit gaming in 2026. As memory chips are diverted to AI data centers, brace for:
🛑 Launch Delays: Next-gen consoles may be pushed to 2029. 💰 Price Hikes: "Pro" variants & current hardware could see MSRP jumps. 📉 Supply Cracks: Component costs are soaring.
Is the AI trade-off worth the gaming "lag"? 🎮📉

One good thing may come out of this AI-driven RAM crunch. It might be the kick in the behind that gets developers to give up complacency about library and framework bloat (*cough* Electron), reverse Wirth's law, and start caring about their applications' memory footprint.
Richard Speed of The Register compared skyrocketing DRAM prices to the 1970s oil crisis. Automakers had to innovate by making their vehicles more fuel-efficient.

ENG: Corporate overlords want us to feed Ai, not just by storing everything in their mega servers and data centers ( euphemistically called "the cloud"), but now by making it really expensive not to create content right there. Watch the vid, boost and please: do not feed the corporate monster...

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, so maybe it's on me:
The AI-caused RAM & GPU shortages aren't just because the ASPD AI techbros NEED all the hardware.
They're also cornering the market so WE can't build machines that can run local AI and avoid $ub$cribing to theirs.
