Another portal along the connecting medieval downtown to ancient (Roman) settlements.

I love a good - they connect places, and times!
Think of all the effort needed to build, then all the time it carried cars. And now? It carries feet.
Connection? Medieval castle to Roman ruins. 😍
Love it!

I suspected this was along a , and the bar and rails on the left prove it!

Ashokan rail trail, my favorite part of this trip. 11 miles of really nice gravel, no cars. I wished it never ended. The gravel was nice enough for me to maintain 16 mph on a road bike. #upstatenewyork #fallfoliage #forest #fall #railtrail #outdoors #cycling #landscape #photography #darktable #abandoned #traintracks
Trees form a tall vault like a cathedral around a wide and straight gravel trail. Many people were walking or biking on the trail in the distance, appearing tiny compared to the trees. Some trees began to turn yellow and orange for fall, but most leaves were still green. There's an opening in the tree vault as it meets a road crossing above the trail. A cyclist was entering the tunnel beneath the road.End of the trail, showing an abandoned railroad track in the forest.A less visited part of the trail through the forest, with more leaves on the ground.

Esopus Creek as it's entering the Ashokan Reservoir in Boiceville. I was on the Ashokan rail trail. #upstatenewyork #river #fallfoliage #fall #landscape #forest #photography #darktable #railtrail
A wide, shallow, and rocky river flows by a forest. Some trees began to change for fall. Heavily overcast.Zooming into some trees that were changing colors by the riverSame as the previous photo, but with portrait composition showing more of the river.

4⭐ Concord-Lake Sunapee Rail Trail, NH

New updated article and downloadable map helping you explore all the segments of this glorious trail.

The image shows a red and yellow caboose train car situated on a short section of railroad track, positioned near a lake with a scenic view of the surrounding hills and trees. The caboose appears to be part of a display or possibly a repurposed structure, as it is not connected to any other train cars and is placed in a picturesque location. The image shows an aerial view of a road running alongside a large body of water, likely a lake or river. The road is flanked by trees and a few houses on one side, with the water on the other side. The landscape includes a mix of forested areas and open water, with mountains visible in the distance under a partly cloudy sky.The image shows a person riding a bicycle on a path through a forested area. The path is surrounded by trees, some of which have sparse foliage, indicating it might be early spring or late fall. The sky is partly cloudy with patches of blue visible. The cyclist is wearing a helmet and a blue jacket. The image shows a scenic view of a river winding through a lush, green landscape. The river is flanked by tall trees and dense vegetation on both sides. In the distance, a range of forested hills rises against a clear blue sky with a few scattered clouds.

3⭐Little Tooky Trail, Hopkinton NH
trailspotting.com/2025/12/litt
A mile-long loop through Rollins Town Forest on a narrow wooded trail and a section of wide railbed that once ran locomotives from the Concord-Claremont Railroad. For the record, I have no idea what or who a Little Tooky might be.

A person walks along a leaf-covered forest trail during daylight in autumn, surrounded by tall deciduous trees with golden and brown foliage. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled light across the path and illuminating the rich textures of fallen leaves. In the foreground, a green trail sign is mounted on a tree trunk. The sign reads “Little Tooky Trail” in white text, with a white hiker icon and an arrow pointing forward, indicating the trail direction.

Passing an active coal mine along the trail. Even from this far away, I could feel could air rushing out.

This rail trail has several long, flat stretches passing through small towns and farmlands. That's a nice juxtaposition against the hilly forests it passes through elsewhere. This is the Deckers Creek Trail near Morgantown, WV.

Inside the Rockland Tunnel along the Allegheny River Trail near Emlenton, PA. The light in the distance is sunlight reflecting off a bend near the southern portal. The openings in the walls to the side were there to allow pedestrians a safe place to stand if a train came through while they were in the tunnel.

One of two tunnels along the Allegheny River Trail #railtrail. This is the southern portal of the southernmost #tunnel -- the Rockland tunnel. This was constructed in 1916 and today it's a beautiful sight on a hot summer day. You can read more about my ride on my blog: https://floor9.com/2022/07/05/the-allegheny-river-trail/

This is one of the most scenic, photogenic rail trails I've ever ridden. It's a very relaxing, mostly paved ride, which makes it easily ADA accessible. There are two incredible tunnels and some amazing bridges along the way which I'll post later. Long story short, western #Pennsylvania is doing amazing things with their #railtrails.

Approaching the abandoned Sideling Hill #tunnel on foot during a snowstorm circa 2009. This is along The Old PA Pike (formerly "the abandoned turnpike"), a bypassed stretch of interstate that was turned into a rail trail.

Interstate? Into a "rail" trail? Yes, really! Much of the right of way for the Pennsylvania Turnpike was originally graded for the never-completed South Pennsylvania Railroad. This tunnel would have actually been dug by hand around 1883 - 1885!

Despite the completion of much grading and multiple tunnels (several of which are still in use today), the railroad failed before it ever started (look up Vanederbilt's Folly). In the 1930s it was repurposed for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the tunnels were given the modern concrete finish you see here.

All of the tunnels were originally single lane (one lane each direction). This caused massive traffic jams and by the mid 1960s, all but three of the remaining tunnels had been twinned. Three tunnels -- Sideling Hill (this tunnel), Rays Hill, and Laurel Hill -- were bypassed instead.

Today this is a 13-mile stretch of interstate-grade road that you can bike and hike. Parts of the film The Road were filmed at the eastern portal of the Rays Hill tunnel, and the entire area has a very surreal, post-apocalyptic feel.
