Ashokan rail trail, my favorite part of this trip. 11 miles of really nice gravel, no cars. I wished it never ended. Trees form a tall vault like a cathedral around a wide and straight gravel trail. Many people were walking or biking on the trail in the distance, appearing tiny compared to the trees. Some trees began to turn yellow and orange for fall, but most leaves were still green.

There's an opening in the tree vault as it meets a road crossing above the trail. A cyclist was entering the tunnel beneath the road.

GAP day 3: the great descent on the last bit of the GAP trail, from Frostburg to Cumberland, MD. The train track there is actually still in use, by a heritage tourist railroad running a steam train. So there's a local race called Race the Train, i.e. cyclists need to bike uphill faster than that train. Not necessarily racing the train at the same time; they need to make it there within a time limit. We met quite a few riders doing that.
