Don't Think I Don't See You.

I glanced out the back door and spotted a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) perched on a limb, eyeing my bird feeders like a feathered predator on surveillance duty. Gives “bird feeders” a whole new meaning, doesn’t it? I grabbed my camera and started snapping—but the hawk took off, and that’s when I realized there was no SD card in the camera. I fixed that blunder, then Charlie and I sat outside for a bit, hoping the hawk might return. To our surprise, it did—something I wished for but didn’t actually expect. The funny part? A bunch of pigeons loitered on the roof of my little garage, completely unfazed. Maybe they know the hawk can’t catch them.

"A red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) grips a rugged tree branch with talons that look as if they could carve the wind. The bird faces the viewer directly, eyes sharp and piercing—glinting with the kind of intensity found only in apex predators. Its hooked beak is open, mid-call or mid-breath, lending a sense of immediacy and voice to this still moment.

The plumage is a rich mosaic of warm browns and pale creams, dappled and streaked like forest sunlight broken through leaves. Reddish hues accent the shoulders, lending this raptor its name, while dark bands paint its tail in crisp, horizontal strokes. The feathers ripple with texture—layered and fine—like armor crafted by nature’s most meticulous artisan.

The backdrop fades into soft greens and blurred foliage, allowing the hawk to dominate the scene with silent authority. It’s a portrait of wild elegance—poised, primal, and utterly commanding." - Copilot

On my afternoon walk, I thought I saw one of the plastic predator bird statues on a suburban fence. Wrong. It was an actual hawk, probably waiting for a rabbit to appear.

I'm guessing from size and color it is a red-shouldered hawk. Also, there is a deciduous forest and river nearby - their favorite haunt.

A large bird on a metal-capped fencepost on a brown wooden fence with trees in the background. The bird's back is to the viewer and its head is facing to the left, but turned nearly directly at the viewer. Feathers are dark brown, but there are white outlines and stripes and a horizontal white line across the tail. At the shoulder is a hint of rufous coloration in a shoulder patch and a yellowish tinge below the neck area.

🌎 Red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus)

The red-shouldered hawk is a medium-sized bird of prey found in North America. It has distinctive reddish-brown shoulders and a barred pattern on its underparts. Known for its piercing call, this hawk prefers wooded habitats near water sources where it hunts small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. It is an agile flier and builds its nest in the canopy of trees. The Red-shouldered hawk plays an important role in controlling rodent populations and is considered a symbol of healthy ecosystems. Five subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A Red-Shouldered Hawk was a distinguished visitor in our side yard last night. He groomed a bit, and then flew off to grab a quick dinner.

You know what's great about not yet being an expert in #naturalist topics?

I was sure I heard a gull yesterday. Merlin informed me it's a red-shouldered hawk. It is crazy to me how birds you think you know (from media,) you really don't know.

Don't get me started on the bald eagle...

Anyway our RS hawks are out doing their thing this morning. Beautiful!

Majestic, Red-Shouldered Hawk

This is an image I've had for a while. The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) was perched in an oak tree inside my backyard fence. I'm sure the bird was hoping for some easy prey like a songbird or squirrel visiting a bird feeder.

"The image shows a red-shouldered hawk perched on a tree branch. The hawk is facing to the right, with its body turned slightly away from the camera, giving a clear view of its back and side. The bird's plumage is a mix of brown and white, with intricate patterns of lighter and darker feathers. The feathers on its back and wings are predominantly dark brown with white spots, while the tail feathers are banded with dark and light stripes. The hawk's eyes are sharp and piercing, with a yellowish hue around the pupils. Its beak is curved and sharp, designed for tearing flesh, and is dark in color with a yellow base. The legs and feet of the hawk are yellow, with strong, curved talons that are dark at the tips. The bird is perched on a branch covered in patches of lichen, with a background of blurred green foliage, indicating a natural habitat." - Copilot

Estero Hawk

The first year I went to Point Reyes, there were Red-Shouldered Hawks everywhere. One time, I didn't even notice one of them perching in front of the spot where I parked my car until a couple of guys with big lenses made a beeline for the bush (I've gotten a bit better at spotting wildlife). I don't know what it was about that year, but I see them a bit less frequently now. It's not dire or anything, but it does make a well posed Red-Shouldered Hawk with a picturesque background a bit more […]
