Sky Has No Edges

While touring the Savannah River near Savannah, Georgia, I noticed a few royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) trailing and circling the boat. They seemed to follow with purpose—perhaps drawn by the occasional snack tossed from passengers, or by the boat’s wake stirring up small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Either way, they moved with practiced grace, scanning the water below like airborne opportunists.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A royal tern slices through the pale sky like a silver arrow mid-release. Its wings are long and slender, outstretched in a wide arc that suggests both precision and ease. The tips of the wings are dark, almost charcoal, contrasting with the soft gray of the upper feathers and the lighter underside. The bird’s body is streamlined—built for speed and distance—with a slight taper toward the tail.

Its beak is sharp and pointed, a vivid orange that catches the eye like a flare against the muted backdrop. Just behind the beak, a small dark patch near the eye gives the tern a look of quiet focus, as if it’s scanning the horizon for something only it can see. The plumage is clean and smooth, with no ruffled edges—this is a bird mid-glide, not mid-struggle.

The background is light and uncluttered, offering no distractions—just open air and the suggestion of altitude. The tern is captured in motion, but the image feels still, like a held breath. In the bottom right corner, the signature “© Swede’s Photographs” anchors the scene with quiet authorship." - Copilot

Royal Tern in the Sky

A few days ago, I shared a story about being aboard a riverboat with laughing gulls trailing behind. I was mistaken—the birds following the boat were actually royal terns (Thalasseus maximus). The bird in this image is one of those graceful companions.

"A royal tern slices through the sky like a living arrow—its body sleek and tapered, wings outstretched in a perfect arc of motion. The backdrop is a soft, powdery blue, as if the heavens themselves have been brushed with watercolor. The tern’s plumage gleams white, catching the light like polished porcelain, while a bold black cap crowns its head, giving it a regal, almost ceremonial look. Its beak is a brilliant orange—sharp, vibrant, and unmistakable—like a flame against the cool sky. Each feather along its wings is etched with precision, forming a delicate lattice that speaks of both strength and grace. Suspended in mid-glide, the bird seems to defy gravity, embodying the quiet power and elegance of nature in motion." - Copilot

Beach Ballet

It was hot today in a lot of places, so I thought maybe a beach scene would be cool. 😎🪭

This is a scene from Holly Beach, Louisiana, the birds are various gulls and terns.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

"The photograph portrays a tranquil coastal setting. The sandy beach stretches out toward the viewer, meeting the gentle waves that lap against the shore. The water is a soothing blend of blues and greens, reflecting the clear sky above. In the foreground, several seagulls glide gracefully through the air. Their wings outstretched; they appear to dance effortlessly above the water. The overall ambiance is one of calmness and natural beauty, with the rhythmic sound of the waves providing a soothing backdrop." - Copilot

Let's all go to the party.

These are a bunch of royal terns (Thalasseus maximus), Forester's terns (Sterna forsteri), and ring billed gulls (Larus delawarensis). The focus is on the Forester's terns closer to the bottom of the frame. This was at Holly Beach, Louisiana.

"Flashing slender, silvery wings and an elegantly forked tail, Forster's Terns cruise above the shallow waters of marshes and coastlines looking for fish. These medium-sized white terns are often confused with the similar Common Tern, but Forster’s Terns have a longer tail and, in nonbreeding plumage, a distinctive black eye patch. Where Common breeds on outer beaches and barrier islands, Forster’s nests farther inland, on edges of freshwater marshes and saltmarshes. It is the only medium-sized tern species found in the United States mainland in winter." - allaboutbirds.org

In this photo, there are dozens of waterbirds standing on a beach looking out to sea. Near a tidal pool at the bottom of the frame there are Forester's terns, one of which is standing in the tidal pool. Farther up the in the frame are the larger royal terns, distinct with their bright orange bills. Mixed in among the terns are a few ring-billed gulls. Foamy waves are approaching at the top of the frame.

Forester's tern description:
"A slender, long-tailed, long-winged seabird with a long, pointed bill and short legs. When perched, the long tail streamers extend past the end of the wings. Breeding adults are gray above and white below, with a black cap and orange bill with black tip. The wingtips are silvery gray, and the legs are orange. Nonbreeding adults are ghostly pale overall, with a dark bill, white crown, and thick blackish eye patch. Juveniles are similar to nonbreeding adults but have tan feathers on the upperparts, a pale base to the bill, and a shorter tail." - allaboutbireds.org

Let's Cool Off.

Here are a bunch of mostly royal and Forester's terns. There is a gull on the left side, maybe a black-billed gull. On the bottom right is a sanderling racing the waves.

This is a photograph of a beach with over a dozen birds gathered at the water's edge. There is brown sand at the bottom of the frame. Farther up, where the wand is still wet with a thin layer of water, there are reflections of birds. There is a irregular line of foamy water pushing up the beach and beyond that the water is choppy. In a slightly diagonal line at the top of the frame is a wave approaching beach.

Bird Beach Party.

I'm not sure where my focus is on this photograph. Perhaps no where because it all seems slightly out of focus. I like looking at it none the less. The beach on a hot day is what the doctor ordered.

This is a photograph taken at Holy Beach, Louisiana. The upper two thirds of the photo is blue tinted ocean water, the lower edge of the frame is brown sand. As the water closes on the beach it rises in swells and white foamy waves form, then push up the beach creating tide pools. On the beach is a group of about 40 birds, several different species of gulls, terns, sanderlings, and some that I can't identify. Most of the birds are on the beach at the water's edge but a few are in the air flying over the others.

Holly Beach.

This is a scene from Holly Beach, Louisiana, on the Gulf of Mexico. The birds are various gulls and terns.

In this scene the is blue ocean and blue sky. There are white waves rolling up churning against brown sand. various white sea birds are flying above the waves - I count seven and there are three birds on the shore gazing out to sea. Where the sand is wet, I see reflections of the birds on shore.

It's your tern.

Back at the beach there are forester's terns in the foreground and out of focus royal terns in the background.

"Forster's and Black Terns breed near each other in marshes. The young, downy chicks can wander away from the nest, and sometimes a parent feeds a young bird of the wrong species." allaboutbirds.org

Got a spotting scope and the zoom capability is a game-changer. Even having forgot my tripod and camera adapter, the pictures came out pretty well.

Royal Tern

This tern was far away, so the photo doesn't have the detail I would like. It does capture how sleek and streamlined the bird looks in the air.

" large tern, slender and long winged. The head is fairly large and often has a ragged crest at the back. Royal Terns have a substantial body, a long, forked tail, and short legs. The bill is long and daggerlike." - allaboutbirds.org
