"A solitary ring-billed gull slices through the air above a blurred, silvery expanse of water. Its wings are fully extended in a graceful arc, revealing a tapestry of soft gray feathers edged with crisp black tips—like ink brushed onto parchment. The bird’s body is sleek and streamlined, its white plumage glowing against the muted backdrop. Its yellow beak, marked with a distinct black ring near the tip, points forward with quiet determination. The gull’s eye is sharp, alert, and framed by a subtle shadow that adds depth to its gaze. The background is a soft blur of rippling water, lending motion and serenity to the scene while keeping the gull in sharp, commanding focus. The image captures not just a bird in flight, but a moment of sovereign elegance—midair poise frozen in time." - Microsoft Copilot

Gull Over Gulfport

Here’s a ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) in flight over the ocean at Gulfport, Mississippi—wings outstretched, riding the coastal wind with quiet precision.

"A ring-billed gull soars above a rippling body of water, its wings fully extended in a graceful arc that showcases the intricate layering of feathers. The bird’s body is streamlined, its white plumage catching the light, while the tips of its wings darken into charcoal gray, like ink brushed onto a canvas of sky.

Its beak—yellow with a distinct black ring near the tip—is slightly open, as if mid-call or mid-breath. The gull’s eyes are focused forward, alert and intent, scanning the horizon or perhaps tracking a distant ripple below. The water beneath it is textured with wind-driven patterns, a shifting tapestry of silver and blue.

The gull’s posture is dynamic yet serene, a moment suspended between motion and stillness. It glides with precision, riding invisible currents, a solitary figure etched against the fluid geometry of the lake or sea. The image captures not just flight, but a sovereign maneuver—an aerial rite of passage." - Microsoft Copilot

🌎 Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis)

The Ring-billed Gull is a medium-sized gull with a white head and underparts, gray back, and black wingtips. A key feature is a black ring encircling its yellow bill and yellowish legs. Widely found across North America, often near large inland lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, especially during the breeding season. Ring-billed Gulls migrate south for winter. Highly opportunistic and social, often seen in large flocks, they feed by wading, surface-dipping, and scavenging. No subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: Ring-billed Gulls have been observed engaging in what appears to be play, by dropping an object while airborne and then swooping down to catch it again before it hits the ground.

This Ring-billed gull not only caught his own food all by himself, he also managed to bring it to shore and eat it all before another gull tried to steal it from him. From what I have seen, this is a true rarity in gull world.

Through the Deep Blue Sky

This image captures a ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) soaring over the Gulf of Mexico in November 2024. The sky turned out a brilliant shade of blue, and I have to say—I’m not disappointed.

The photographs I share here aren't as vivid as those in my Pixel gallery. To ensure they load more quickly, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Feel free to take a look!

"This image features a ring-billed gull soaring through a vast, deep blue sky. Its wings are fully extended, showcasing the elegant contrast between crisp white feathers and the dark tips that mark the edges. The gull’s body appears weightless as it glides effortlessly, carried by unseen currents of air. The sunlight highlights subtle details—the slight curve of its wings, the smooth arch of its neck, and the sharp focus of its eyes as it surveys the open sky below.

There’s a sense of freedom in the image, the gull unbound by earth, moving with precision through the endless expanse of blue. Its bright yellow bill stands out against the sky, and the delicate ring around it remains a distinct feature even in flight. The simplicity of the scene—just bird and sky—creates a feeling of openness, movement, and quiet power." - Copilot

Moment in Flight

This is a fairly good image of a ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) mid-descent, focused on landing. I’d love to say I captured this moment on a secluded beach, but the reality is far less picturesque—I snapped it in a Walmart parking lot in Albany, Georgia, far from the ocean. Unbothered by the lack of sea breeze, the gull was intent on settling atop a light pole. Ring-bills are nothing if not adaptable.

"This image captures a ring-billed gull in an exquisite moment of flight, its wings fully outstretched, creating a striking silhouette against a soft, pastel-toned backdrop. Each delicate feather is visible in fine detail, the tips of its wings adorned with black edges dotted with white markings. Its sleek, streamlined body is predominantly white, with hints of gray blending subtly along the wings and back. The gull’s beak is a bright yellow, contrasted by the distinct black ring near its tip—a signature trait of the species. Its eyes, sharp and attentive, scan the world below, reflecting a sense of purpose in its graceful movement. The surrounding background is blurred, emphasizing the gull’s elegant presence and enhancing the sense of motion. The result is a dynamic yet serene visual—a quiet testament to the beauty of avian flight." - Copilot

Stillness and Motion on Ice at Stewart Park

A gull, wings arched and tail fanned, banks in flight. Behind it, the scene is deeply layered: snow falls against distant, leafless trees with orange foliage, giving the image a painterly backdrop. The muted tones of the gull’s wings blend beautifully with the subdued greys and browns of the lake and shoreline.A single gull dominates the frame, captured in motion above a thin strip of ice and snow-covered shoreline. The bird is flying low over the water, which is choppy and grey. The background includes a row of boathouses or docks, just visible through the snowfall.Three gulls approach a frozen section of the lake, just above where the ice meets open water. More ducks and gulls are visible in the background, and the snow continues to fall in streaks across the frame. The landscape looks bleak and beautiful, strewn with driftwood and edged by a snow-covered bank.A tightly framed gathering of gulls resting on the ice, some standing, others tucked into their feathers. They appear huddled together against the cold. Snowflakes speckle the frame, and behind them, brown rocks and grey water suggest the edge of open lake beyond the ice.

FEATHRUARY 2025

Prompt 17: Parking Lot
-> Ring-Billed Gull

The prompt is "parking lot birds", does anyone think of anything other than seagulls?!

I chose the ring-billed gull, a beautiful, fierce and strong-willed birb who is even found in parking lots or other places where humans possibly lose food (and the definition of "lose" is quite loose here, because sometimes it simply means that these birbs will snatch your snack right out of your hand :D).

Their diet usually includes fish, invertebrates, snails and even carrion, but these not-at-all-shy birds have come closer and closer to cities over the years and can now be observed chasing kids with ice cream cones, snatching fish burgers out of unsuspecting tourists' hands or even robbing gas stations and taking bags of crisps. They want it, they take it - I love them so much! 😍

FUN FACT
In the 19th century, the ring-billed gull was frequently hunted for its plumage. Fortunately, the population has since rebounded and it is now not only the most common gull in North America, but also the third most common bird worldwide with an estimated population of 1.2 billion birds.
