Corps completes Mississippi River sill to protect New Orleans’ drinking water

The Corps built the sill in 12 days and finished construction on Oct. 10. The sill forms a continuous barrier across the river near Myrtle Grove in Plaquemines Parish, 55 feet below the water’s surface. The Corps expects it will successfully keep salt water from reaching the drinking water intakes upriver.

Saltwater wedge moves up Mississippi River but not expected to reach New Orleans, Corps says

The saltwater wedge keep creeping up the Mississippi River, but isn’t expected to reach New Orleans or threaten its water supply. The Corps has built an underwater sill to prevent salt water from moving upriver every year since 2022.

Construction of the sill is nearly complete and will be finished by Oct. 12. The salt water is expected to reach the sill by Oct. 18.

So, there used to be a huge swimming pool at the Crane Estate -- not just any swimming pool, it was a saltwater swimming pool! Back then, they piped in the water from the nearby ocean, but these days, saltwater swimming pools use salt chlorine generators. Saltwater pool systems, while potentially corrosive, are a way to keep swimming pools clean without using chlorine (I can't stand swimming in chlorinated water).

Also, I wonder if salts obtained from #desalination plants could be used in saltwater pool systems? Hmmmm...
