AGI - Iris Dena, la nave affondata da un sottomarino americano al largo delle coste dello Sri Lanka, era un gioiello della Marina iraniana. Dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale ci sono solo due precedenti: quello dell'incrociatore leggero argentino General Belgrano, colpito dal sottomarino nucleare inglese Conqueror nel 1982 durante la guerra delle Falkland, e quello della fregata indiana Khukri silurata dal sottomarino pakistano Hangor nella guerra del 1971.
La Dena era un cacciatorpediniere di classe Moudge della Flotta Meridionale della Marina militare della Repubblica islamica dell'Iran, ed era di ritorno dall'International Fleet Review 2026 a Visakapatanam, in India.
Caratteristiche e armamento della Dena
Era lunga 94 metri e disloca 1.500 tonnellate. Era il primo cacciatorpediniere iraniano a essere equipaggiato con quattro motori di fabbricazione iraniana, i "Bonyan 4" ed era armata con un numero "significativo" di missili e di un sistema di lancio verticale. Il suo apparato di controllo del tiro era teoricamente in grado di intercettare 40 bersagli e di scontrarsi con cinque bersagli simultaneamente.
Era equipaggiata con missili terra-aria e quattro missili antinave Qader, un cannone navale Fajr-27 da 76 mm e un cannone antiaereo Fath-40 da 40 mm, due Oerlikon da 20 mm, due mitragliatrici pesanti da 12,7 mm e due lanciasiluri tripli da 533 mm. Montava un radar Asr, con copertura a 360 gradi in un raggio di 300 km.

AGI - Iris Dena, the ship sunk by an American submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka, was a jewel of the Iranian Navy. There have only been two previous cases since World War II: that of the Argentine light cruiser General Belgrano, struck by the British nuclear submarine Conqueror in 1982 during the Falkland War, and that of the Indian frigate Khukri torpedoed by the Pakistani submarine Hangor in 1971.
The Dena was a Moudge-class destroyer of the Southern Fleet of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, and was returning from the 2026 International Fleet Review in Visakhapatnam, India.
Features and armament of the Dena
It was 94 meters long and had a displacement of 1,500 tons. It was the first Iranian destroyer to be equipped with four engines manufactured in Iran, the “Bonyan 4”, and was armed with a “significant” number of missiles and a vertical launch system. Its fire control system was theoretically capable of intercepting 40 targets and engaging five targets simultaneously.
It was equipped with surface-to-air missiles and four Seahawk anti-ship missiles, a 76 mm Fajr-27 naval gun, a 40 mm Fath-40 anti-aircraft gun, two 20 mm Oerlikon guns, two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns, and two triple 533 mm torpedo tubes. It mounted an Asr radar with 360-degree coverage within a range of 300 km.

The torpedo that sank it was a high-performance Mk48 costing $3.5 million and capable of striking a target at 70 kilometers.
