#Selfishness

@lacybarry I guess there are several posible explanations:

#fake modesty to avoid be asked to care for the world or others "I am just surviving, so what can I do? I can't change anything myself!...I am hardly living". In that way they avoid people asking them for help in the future.

The #System appreciates attitudes of #self #punishment which can be only words or more than words because is a sign of obedience, low self stem or looking humble is important to keep everyone far from their real power and the willingness to organise with others.

#lazy to think and not really needing others due to their privileges, or having this fantasy that they do #all by themselves, forgetting that even their farts would not be possible without a net of people doing all kind of works, activities or being peaceful so there is some order that allows they to go to grocery shop!

#selfishness because they don't really feel something must change as current situation is comfortable enough for them. So they don't really mean their Apocalipsis like ways of thinking, if they did they minimum would be making preparations for it. So eve they can be climate change activists they don't really believe on that as they don't change any behaviour or cut any consumerism apart from poses.

Being #nihilistic uses less brain resources or is more adequate to people refusing to use their thinking devices since they are young... putting your mind to #think implies doing this on their own and organise with other to change all what they diagnose from their sofa as #hopeless and horrible...

Etc.

"Perhaps, when Mr. Biden fought to run for a second term, he was acting on hope. But it’s hard not to think that he, and the people around him, were partly operating out of denial. Denial prevents people from being able to plan for the worst":

A quotation from Franklin Roosevelt

The enemies of democracy are now trying, by every means, to destroy our unity. The chief weapon they now use against us is propaganda, propaganda that appeals to selfishness, that comes in ever increasing quantities, with ever increasing violence, from across the seas. And it is disseminated within our own borders by agents or innocent dupes of foreign powers.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man’s oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

"My generation made a naive error. We believed that social change was only a matter of challenging modes of production and distribution in #society. We did not understand the immense role of culture. #Capitalism is a culture, and we must respond to and resist capitalism with a different #culture. Another way to put this: we are in a struggle between a culture of #solidarity and a culture of #selfishness."

A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson

We do not go to cowards for tender dealing; there is nothing so cruel as panic; the man who has least fear for his own carcase, has most time to consider others.

A quotation from C. C. Colton

Posthumous charities are the very essence of selfishness, when bequeathed by those who, when alive, would part with nothing.

John Kenneth Galbraith's observation about conservatism is as relevant as ever.

"The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

wist.info/galbraith-john-kenne

The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. It is an exercise which always involves a certain number of internal contradictions and even a few absurdities. The conspicuously wealthy turn up urging the character-building value of privation for the poor. The man who has struck it rich in minerals, oil, or other bounties of nature is found explaining the debilitating effect of unearned income from the state. The corporate executive who is a superlative success as an organization man weighs in on the evils of bureaucracy. Federal aid to education is feared by those who live in suburbs that could easily forgo this danger, and by people whose children are in public schools. Socialized medicine is condemned by men emerging from Walter Reed Hospital. Social Security is viewed with alarm by those who have the comfortable cushion of an inherited income. Those who are immediately threatened by public efforts to meet their needs — whether widows, small farmers, hospitalized veterans, or the unemployed — are almost always oblivious to the danger.

The result was ruthlessness in the expansion of the economy, in the of nature for our selfish purposes. The root of our current problems lies in our thinking: in our worldview and our view of .

Maximum wealth equals maximum happiness for everyone. Therefore, Neoclassical economics understands that following one’s own self-interest is what brings maximum happiness to society.

English version of today's cartoon for Dutch daily newspaper Trouw.

#empathy #sharing #selfishness

Cartoon showing a street corner. We are looking through the window of Rainbow elementary school , where children are taught about sharing. Outside, people are casually walking past homeless people sitting on the street, looking at their smartphones. A big SUV drives through a puddle with its rear wheel, the water splashing over a homeless person. A billboard shows a large finger pointing at departing migrants, with the text 'F#ck off! Vote selfishly'.
