COMMS ALERT:
Looks like the TakeitDown act supposedly targetting nonconsensual nudes but impossible for "covered platforms" to comply with has passed Congress.
This could mean real trouble for encrypted messenger services like Signal that have a "business presence" inside the U$. Signal could have to shut down, the code be forked, and a great deal of rewriting done to run multiple instances on expendable, possibly Torified underground servers.
Security upgrades in Matrix might be cheaper and more effective than that.
A possible bypass for Signal would be to force all messages to be disappearing messages, with a maximum available time equal to or shorter than the response time required by this new law-or even simply a new limit to how long Signal SERVERS retain an undelivered or backed up message to that time limit. A user's cell phone is not a "covered platform" as it is not a "web service" at all.
For you as an activist this means to learn to use Matrix or another decentralized encrypted chat system as well as Signal. Signal is believed by many to have stronger encryption than Matrix, but it's anyone's guess if its central server model can survive Trump and the current wave of repressive legislation.
