A spot to enjoy the slow, relaxing teatime of the soul

Sisowath Quay riverside walk along Tonle River stretches past Royal Palace to Koh Pich.

There is always a cooling breeze making daytime city exploring bearable. The trees provides some shadow.

This riverside is an essential part of visiting Phnom Penh, capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The pearl of Asia are defined by the rivers around and cutting through it.

Photo shows a brick laid square and sidewalk to a wide blue river. Low rails of brickwork made for sitting border the walking area from the stairs down to the river. Along the sidewalk and the siderail there are low trees with large, shadowing crowns. Along the walkway to the left there are benches and bins. In the background at the left side of the river there are some house boats with red roofs visible. On the other side of the river a low area of land with mix building types and heights from two floors to high rises shows a city in development. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Phnom Penh welcomes visitors.

Buenas,

A golden lion with a Bird’s view

A Royal Golden lion guard sharing a bird’s view on the spot where Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers are meeting. It is just in front of the Royal Square and Royal Castle in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This meeting point is at the middle of Sisowath Quay river walk. It is still a nice walk both north and south from this point. If the cooling breeze from the river is there, of course. On a quiet day it will become a very hot walk pretty fast.

This riverside walk has been extended after the Pandemic. Now it extends north towards the Chroy Changvar Bridge, were the large main roads north and northwest enters Phnom Penh proper. And it has been stretched south along, around and over Koh Pich Island with its modern riverside development of housing and shopping areas.

Along the walk there are some interesting places to take photos, and there are new offerings of drinks and eating targeting people enjoying this walk. Being locals or visitors.

King Sisowath was king of Cambodia in the early 1900s, at the time Phnom Penh was called the Pearl of Asia because of the French Asian architecture, modern city design and art deco styled facades and public art.

Today the riverside walk mirrors this experience, showing the growth and development of a new metropolitan area in Southeast Asia.

To the left there are two pigeons flying by, sharing the lion statue’s view. It is a sunny day, and the sky have some very lightly clouds.

"Old angry man blue sky river"

An evening where a sudden change to rainy clouds added heavy blue tone to the Tonle Sap River Walk along Sisowath Quay.

And some reminiscence of a rather angry man in the cloud warning of a rainy night, indeed...

In the evening, the riverside fills up by locals socializing, playing, exercising, eating, drinking, dating and selling. It is hard to say if it is more lively there than in the old town behind Sisowath Quay, or the heavy trafficked river filled with boats on the other side.

The river boats offering day cruise, sunset cruise or dinner cruise are always out try to fill up their boats. Their sales agents work hard to get late arriving guests to choose their boat for the evening.

This evening’s river cruise boats waiting for their guests may need to prepare for a reduced visibility later. On the other hand, with this sunset, customers will be compensated.

In the background there is the other river brim, with smaller lower houses and some larger high rises. In the north background the sky is divided in two. To the right it is light blue with few clouds lit up yellow from the sunset. To the left there are dark, stormy/rainy clouds. One of the clouds can seem to be forming an angry man’s profile. There are high expectations for a rainy night.

A spot to enjoy the slow, relaxing hours before sunset

The riverside walk along the west side of Tonle Sap River and east of Sisowath Quay Blvd. stretches nearly 4 kilometres. That is past the junction where Ton Le Sap joins the mighty Mekong River in front of the Royal Square and the Royal Palace. Then it continues to Koh Pich Island.

It is a nice walk and deeply needed when the day is hot and the sun is beating down. There is always a cooling breeze there. And for people who learns and experience places and cities by walking, fresh, moving air is always welcome.

The tree along the walk provides some shadow in addition, making the walk pleasant with some break på option.
Those who is bothered by the heat, or want to reduce the exposure to direct sun, this walk is peaceful and cooler in the morning. The few people out along the riverside are often tourists or people doing their morning run.

The riverside walk is an essential part of a visit to Phnom Penh and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Tonle Sap River and Mekong River are vital for the history of the Kingdom and former empire. And the rivers are two out the several rivers forming the basis for the capital 600 years ago.

Punting and fishing in deep blue and green

A view to the south from our lunch break spot between Battambang and Siem Reab. Wetlands are amazing rich in biological varieties, and gives some fantastic views and outlooks.

The gentleman in the wooden boat continued his rowing towards the small piece of wood with a fishing net connected to it. But just as he was to pick it up, he punted on towards shore.

The landscape in the countryside of Siem Reap is stunning in so many ways. This is one of those views.

Photo shows a landscape divided in three fields. In the middle is a derp green stretch of turf covered wetland. It stretches into the horizon were it is bordered by a line of green trees and bushes. The upper third is lightly clouded bright sunny sky. The lower third is a deep blue wetland lake broken up with bushes, grass and a wooden boat punted by a man. He has a couple of boxes in the boat, if they are for freight or storing of his fish catch is not known. A small wooden brick in the water marks a fishing net for fishing, and he is steering the boat in that direction. It is a peaceful, sunny day with strong colours in Cambodian wetlands.

A lunch break on the backroads to Siem Reap

They say in the old Norse book of wisdom and cultural heritage, the Hávamál:

“He craves for water, who comes for refreshment, drying and friendly bidding, marks of good will, fair fame if ‘tis won, and welcome once and again.

“He hath need of his wits who wanders wide, aught simple will serve at home; but a gazing-stock is the fool who sits mid the wise, and nothing knows.”

Wisdom is to enjoy and remember delicious food, good friends and a restful view. Knowledge is know how to get there and enjoy it.

This harmonies quite well with the Khmer view of food, friendship and enjoying a chat. And of course enjoy new sights and a break from everyday with a nice view while travelling. And bird viewing, come to that.

Enjoy the greener alternative

This backroad was consider a shortcut back when we were travelling there, bypassing the crossroads and queues in Sisophon in Western Cambodia. During the pandemic, a huge upgrade was done to the highway between Battambang and Sisiphon and National Road 5 and NR 6. It reduces the travelling time between Siem Reap and Battambang, and between the border city Poipet and Battambang.

The reason to take this backroad even with a new road, is the splendid landscape, the lesser amount of tourists and other travellers, and good food and drinks with a view to peaceful, yet lively, wetland area.

It is so nice to have choices when travelling.

This place is near the Kro Bao Village Peam Pagoda for those who want to see a typical village pagoda in the countryside outside Siem Reap.

Over it, being the other half of the photo, is a blue sky only broken by some light, white skies. It is a sunny, peaceful day under "endless" blue skies. This sky is mirrored in the lake in the lower part of the photo. There is an open wooden boat to the right just to the left of the road bridge foundations. In the middle of the lake in the lower part is a small area of grass and bushes.

Lunch with birds and fish in the wetlands

Off the beaten track, or the main highway system, between Battambang and Siem Reap. This drive gave us a lunchbreak with a stunning view. And great food and drinks, too.

The wetland basin of Tonle Sap Lake is one of the largest and most biological diverse wetland systems in the world. Its a key factor for how one of the largest empires in human history was able to grow and exist.

Extremely nutrient water system

Not only for growing of rice and vegetables in several harvests every year. Tonle Sap is one of the lakes with highest concentrations of fish and other freshwater food in the world. Being able to deliver large amounts of nutrient rich food to a growing population.

Important not only for growth, but for keeping creativity and entrepreneurial effort high.

Sitting and enjoying the bird life and the local fishermen doing their catch is impressing, too. The large, blue sky as well.

There are birds hunting and resting near and in the lakes, and there are some flying over it too. In the center stands a single, solitude tree of middle height. The wetland stretches into the background horizon, where it is bordered by a distant belt of forrest. Behind the forest is a small hill to the tight with a pagoda nearly invisible. Over it, being the other half of the photo, is a blue sky only broken by some light, white skies. It is a sunhy, peaceful day under "endless" blue skies.

Old man blue sky river

An evening where a sudden change to rainy clouds added heavy blue tone to the Ton-Le Sap river walk.

And some angry skies, indeed...for those who spot such pareidolian patterns.

But the evening dinner boats are ready for an evening with some colourful partying on the river.
