An exciting day as we set up our seagrass mesocosms! As part of an #NSFfunded project, we are looking at the ecology of viruses in turtlegrass. #USFCMS #seagrass #ocean #Florida #virus #plant #LetItGrow #aquarium #science

Lab lunch today celebrating 3 birthdays and the last official day of summer (even though we have ~2 months of summer temperatures left here in Florida) #USFCMS
Whenever I’m feeling burnt out with work, #outreach is a guaranteed way to get reinvigorated! Had a blast this week exploring #TampaBay #plankton samples with a local Girl Scout troop! #USFCMS #GirlScouts #GirlScoutAlum #womeninSTEM #science

I am SO excited for this #SciArt #coral seminar tomorrow hosted by #USFCMS. Open to the public so if you’re in the #TampaBay area, please join us! Otherwise, check out Beatriz Chachamovits’ gorgeous work online: https://www.beatrizchachamovits.com/
Check out episode #2 of Mark Martin’s “Matters Microbial” podcast on microbe tv featuring examples of shock-and-awe microbiology for grabbing students’ attention and an interview with me :)

I’m still in denial over the fact that it’s August but it’s really nice to start having the lab members all back in one place (yay for a birthday lunch today) and I am SO proud of our summer interns (3 undergrads and 1 high school student) who made incredible progress over the past few months #science #USFCMS #research #proudPI
They’re tiny but deadly - a glimpse into the ciliate culture that’s responsible for killing sea urchins in the Caribbean (each ciliate is about 1/20th of a millimeter long) #USFCMS #urchin #marine #microscopy #science #microbiology #protist #ocean #oceanography
Hoping to see some new #science folks exploring Mastodon so figured it’s time for another #introduction - I’m Mya, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Our lab studies #microbes (bacteria, viruses, protists) in the oceans and other environments and also works on #fish egg identification. I also post about my cute dog and cat a lot! #USFCMS #ocean #marine #oceanography #microbiology #virology #research #seagrass #urchin #academia
On the first day of their summer internships, undergrads Aly and Nina are heading out on the R/V Weatherbird II for the #GoMeTS cruise studying harmful algal blooms #USFCMS #Florida #ocean #oceanography #research #dinoflagellate #Karenia #HAB
Yesterday at the #USFCMS Spring Fling, graduate student Hallie Repeta received the Vembu Subramanian MSAC Award! This award is given to a student who exhibits qualities of charity, community spirit, and positivity. Hallie is a wonderful recipient (as are all of the precious awardees pictured here with the Dean). Not a day goes by when I don’t miss Vembu, but he would love seeing all the good he’s still inspiring in our community.
So proud of #USFCMS graduate student Christina Chadwick, who did her Master’s degree with me and Katherine Hubbard looking at Pseudonitzchia (#phytoplankton #diatom) diversity, toxin levels, and environmental parameters in the Gulf of Maine - her research will help in understanding the drivers of these harmful algae blooms. Christina is highlighted among this weekend’s #USF graduates - https://www.usf.edu/news/boundless-bulls/students/grad-series-spring-2023.aspx #graduation #science #ocean

We spent most of 2022 hunting down a sea urchin killer - and the results are published in Science Advances today - check out this story (with lots of great photos) by #USFCMS - https://www.usf.edu/marine-science/news/2023/scientists-identify-2022-sea-urchin-killer.aspx summarizing the work. #urchin #Diadema #disease #ocean #marine #oceanography #ciliate #protist #ecology #research #science #invertebrate #microscopy 🧵
