#Varroa mite detected in #SouthAustralia for first time!

The discovery was made in a #beehive at #Pooginook in the state's Riverland during routine surveillance by PIRSA inspectors.

The infested hive is believed to have originated in a consignment of hives from Queensland. #auspol #bees #apiarist

Honey

Went and picked honey last week from my supplier, a bio security Officer for Varroa (Varroa development officer). The jar on the right is what I normally get, ‘cause honey. 🍯🐝

Not now. I can only get the middle and left size. Why?

The impact of #VarroaMite on local hives. The example he gave was from our OS SE Island neighbours where the number of hives went 2000 to 8. This is the future of bees in Victoria.

@entsocamerica

Interesting:

"Varroa mites originally evolved to parasitize Apis cerana, the honey bee species native to Asia, and only affected drones of that species. When Varroa mites infect worker brood in Asian bees, the larva dies and the Varroa mite can’t reproduce."

"As they adapted to the honey bees (Apis mellifera) common in Europe and North America, however, Varroa mites became able to parasitize drone, queen, or worker bees. However, there is a still a large preference for drone brood. Varroa mites are often 5–10 times more abundant in drone brood cells than worker or queen cells. Since drones take longer to mature into adults and the drone brood are bigger, the Varroa mites can produce more offspring in these cells. By removing excess drone brood, a beekeeper can eliminate a large portion of their Varroa mite population."

Last week, we had some warm days (15°C), perfect for checking the hives. Out of 10, one didn’t survive—likely due to varroa. Another was too small to make it through spring. A tough part of beekeeping, but nature moves on.

Honey mortality can be significantly reduced by ensuring that treatments for the parasitic occur within specific timeframes, a new study reveals.

I am ecstatic to learn that one of our beehives is still varroa-free, here in #brisbane, #australia. It's only a matter of time before they get here though. 🙁

I also harvested about 20kg of honey. The bees were very calm, though it was 30°C and 80% humidity. Sweat city. I'll check our other hive next week.

Beide Verfahren erzeugen zusätzlichen recht sauberen #Bienenwachs.

Making a thing.

When you need a strainer of a particular size, find something created in OpenSCAD and change the dimensions. v2 was sized and spaced ok but it was too thin. v3 fixed the thinness and added some rings for support around the diameter. The rings were added in the slicer.

A bee strainer for checking for varroa mites that fits in a peanut butter jar.

The prototype strainer in the plastic jar. It was a single wall thickness and very stringy and slightly oversized spacing because the thin columns moved as they were printed. The blue lid for the jar sits to the left and it says jif on the top. If it leaks a lot two TPU gaskets can be printed. One under the strainer lip and one to fit in the lid. It is printed with PLA. The wash for the bees will use soap, not alcohol. A screen capture of OpenSCAD showing the latest modifications. The left side is the text file that is translated to the shape. Only the parameter portion of the text file is visible. The magic part is off screen. The latest version less than half way printed. The first ring that was added can be seen. There is still stringing but each column is 2 perimeters so is constructed as a single loop.
