Chimps also combine vocalizations to create new meanings and contexts for communication. phys.org/news/2025-05-language #chimpanzees #chimps #vocalizations #communication

Scientific #discovery involves making mistakes, but these are often omitted from official reports. In this preprint, I recount a #mistake which led to the discovery that #rats were making ultrasonic #vocalizations while playing. Scientific serendipity is worth celebrating! (thanks to Markus Wöhr for encouragement to submit the tale for a special issue on ultrasonic vocalizations).

If you happen to be in München this September, make sure to stop by the 97th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Mammalian Biology to see my genius colleague Dr. Juan Olvido Perea García talk about our research about #vocalizations in response to different external #eye #appearances in #pygmy #marmosets (C. pygmaea).

@angeliquesophia

My experience is a) #flycatchers are impossible to ID… b) except when you familiarize yourself with their #vocalizations. The Eastern Wood Pewee is common in #Iowa… I've seen one just a few times, but in the spring I hear them several times a day! "Peee-oh-eeee…. (pause) Peee-uuur" 🙂

"Are humans the only apes capable of flexibly orchestrating #isochrony and #synchrony in their behaviour? To date, the joint presence of, and connection between, isochrony and synchrony in other mammals has never been found. Here we show the first #evidence for isochrony, #rhythmic flexibility mediated by co-singing, and synchrony in the #vocalizations of an #ape, the lar #gibbon."
