There are countless versions of TETRIS out there, but I believe one of the most beautiful versions out there, is the 1992 PC release of "TETRIS Classic" from Spectrum HoloByte. Here's the version for Windows 3.1:

Thanks to the uploader "Telev78", this has both the 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppy disks with disk images, flux streams, as well as high-res scans of the disks, box and manual! Go get it!

Partying like it's 1993 in my office this afternoon (wait for it...)

Die deutsche Vollversion von Microsoft Office 4.2 für Windows 3.x ist nun auch endlich im Internet Archive zu finden. 28 x 1.44MB HD-Disketten und eine gigantische würfelförmige Schachtel wurden sauber ausgelesen, gescannt und hochgeladen. Gehört in jede 90er Retro-Sammlung!

Also das war jetzt heute mit großem Abstand eine der nervigsten Disketten-Auslese-Aktionen aller Zeiten! MS-Office 4.2 auf 28 x HD-Disketten. Ich musste fast jede einzelne Diskette reinigen und die meisten davon mehrere Male in verschiedenen Laufwerken einlesen, bis ich von allen ein perfektes IMG Image speichern konnte. Hat mich locker 6 Stunden gekostet und am Ende hat das dann selbst einem verrückten Nerd wie mir keinen Spaß mehr gemacht.

Aber natürlich bin ich jetzt doch froh, dass es irgendwie geklappt hat. Irgendwann später am Tag muss ich jetzt noch alle Disketten sauber über den Scanner laufen lassen, dann lad ich sie alle nach Archive.org hoch.

Jetzt mach ich erstmal n bisschen Pause.

Back when I was a kid and ever since I got my own computer, I was equally excited about pretty much every new piece of software. Not just games, but also tools and applications. I guess, that's one of the reasons I still love to include oldschool office programs in my modern retro collection.

Anyway, here's a fresh KryoFlux disk set of Microsoft's Excel 5.0a for Windows 3.1. It's the German version from 1994.

I usually don't add OEM CD-ROMs to my retro collection, but this one is such a perfect reference library of iconic Windows 3.x casual games, I get the feeling it needs to be preserved and shared. Among other stuff, it includes Microsoft's Arcade 1.0 and Entertainment Packs 1 to 4.

I was today years old when i found out: When you format a floppy diskette through Windows 3.11's File Manager, it writes a strange kind of boot sector to the disk. File system is declared as "FAT16", instead of "FAT12" and, although it's a German version, everything's in English. That's actually pretty annoying!

For some time in the early 90s, included in select 10-packs of Verbatim floppy disks, there was an 11th disk containing a few games taken from Microsoft's Entertainment Pack for Windows. Once part of a simple promo campaign, these disks have turned into sought-after collectibles for fans of classic "WEP" games.

I've had disk images of these samplers for a while now, both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, but only today I realized, they were also released with 5.25 inch disks. I really love these bigger diskettes, so I think this is awesome!

I could even find a working disk image on the Internet Archive. Have fun!

Nachdem Archive.org inzwischen auch wieder Uploads erlaubt, konnte ich euch heute Mittag endlich mal ein Update meiner 86Box Installation hochladen. Es handelt sich weiterhin um einen 486er DX4 mit 100MHz, PC-DOS 7, Windows 3.11. Neben ein Bisschen Feinschliff in der Konfiguration, sind jetzt auch deutlich mehr Spiele dabei und ich hab euch auch noch ein paar schöne PDF Handbücher dazugeworfen.

Quaak! ist eines dieser seltenen Spiele für Windows 3.x, das viele gar nicht mehr kennen. Ein kleiner, aber feiner Klon des bekannten Automatenspiels "Frogger".

Veröffentlicht wurde es 1992 im Rahmen der "Goldenen Serie" von Data Becker und ab sofort ist das Spiel auch vollständig, mit Handbuch und Originaldiskette, im Internet Archive verfügbar.

In 1993, I made the switch from Workbench 3.0 to Windows 3.1. Although I had been a proud Amiga owner at this point, Windows 3.1 looked so much more modern and elegant. It felt like a major upgrade. I will never understand why Commodore did such a lousy job with their user interface!

@dfx I had luck with the Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro and 4mb of VRAM, which let me get 1024x768 / 16.7m colors.

I finally managed to install some proper drivers for my virtual 86Box graphics card on Windows 3.11. This is a Diamond Stealth-32 with only 2MB of video RAM, so it can only reach 65535 colors in a 800x600 resolution. Still a much needed improvement from the regular SVGA drivers and their 256 colors. Simply beautiful!
