I’m feeling good. I just sent chapter 20 of my #WIP to my editor. At this point I’m not sure if I’m a quarter, half, or three quarters done. All I know is that the story is picking up steam #writingcommunity

#WordWeavers 2026.01.09 — Have you invented any words/sayings/swears etc. for your story?

Yes. They must be instantly understandable in context, and preferably humorous or revelatory. The POV is a day angel, a thirty year old woman with feathered wings who can fly. I try to stick with standard English, but I do modify clichés and invective, repurposing and warping normal words. A culture-centric story needs flavoring and spice. Here's a few in each category:

Aerie: Any home accessible only by flight. Bolt lives in a converted attic apartment in the big city and her aerie has an entrance hatch instead of a window.

Feather: A colloquialism for another day angel if you are a day angel yourself, an in-group word for a minority. It's a racist slur if you use it and aren't a day angel. Prepare to be punched.

Being demonstrative and flying tandem: These require a CW. Sorry.

Flew into a lamppost: A euphemism for looking beat up when you don't want to admit how it happened. Also used for failing to find a solution to a difficult problem.

Flying below ceiling, maintaining level: Being careful when someone dangerous is watching you. We might use, "Keeping your nose clean."

Flap: Invective. Literally refers to something intimate someone with soft feathers could do for another, considered pleasurable. It's perfect "swear" because it can be used by a day angel in most instances where we'd use a similar sounding crude word without actually using that similarly sounding crude word. When used by the non-angelic, it can also insinuate certain social or cultural things I won't get into.

Words, sayings, and invective are associated with the non-angelic, too. Not listing those this time.

The Triton plunged even deeper into the Mariana Trench, a silver needle piercing the ocean’s black heart. I pressed a hand against the cold view-port, the fortified glass a fragile barrier between our hubris and a crushing demise. Our team had spent years on this project, meticulously planning, designing, and testing to withstand these unimaginable pressures. Still, I couldn’t shake the memory of those other fools from the SeaCrate incident — the sheer arrogance of men who had disregarded every safety measure and treated the deep as if it were a simple weekend adventure.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

No writing today. Mind is on an admin task that is a little scary. Made progress, though.

Also made progress with chores, ran my Mastermind meeting (we shifted it to Fridays), and read a bit.

It's still a good day. But I really want to get back to Moon tomorrow, too.
