I put the oxalic acid pads in the hives today. Each hive gets 50 grams of oxalic acid that is mixed with 50 grams of glycerin. The glycerin is heated to LESS than 170F/76C before the oxalic acid is mixed in and then the Swedish dishcloths are cut in half and soaked in the mixture.

This was the Center hive that has the most bees.

No stings, no drama, no surprises.

There's a lot of pollen going into the hives today. Seems to be yellow and that cream or buff colored cedar/arborvitae pollen. I currently have violas/violets on the ground blooming but they're not busy there but It seems there's yellow pollen flowers somewhere that are big enough to cover a bee with pollen.

A cropped closeup photo of a honey bee with a large amount of gathered pollen on it's hind leg that is a deep yellow color like a school bus. The bee's body is also dusted with the same color pollen indicating it's been inside a large flower probably. The bees is right side towards the camera and facing upward as it rests on the edge of the landing board of a Langstroth beehive that is designated the "West hive". It is a light colored bee.A cropped photo showing the entrance to what is called the "East hive". It is a Langstroth bee hive. There are many bees present that are carrying light colored pollen into the hive.A cropped photo showing the entrance to the "Center hive". There are bees with light colored pollen and also some with yellow pollen.A cropped photo of the "West hive" entrance showing several bees with yellow pollen and a few with light colored pollen.

The oldest chicken arrived here 11 years ago today. I think she might be the chick on the left, her eyes/pupils have always been a bit different.

Previous post.

An 11 year old photo showing days old chicks. There are 5 black and white looking chicks that have their wing feathers starting to show. There were 3 hens and 2 roosters. They are in a cardboard box with wood shavings.

No crocus blooms, a new tulip is up which is one of the freebies from the bulb order, and one of the smallest pots has a daffodil showing.

A photo showing crocus and daffodil plants. Nearest the camera and slightly right of center is the first crocus to emerge along with it's co-planted daffodil. It has sort of green and white striped leaves and is about 3 inches tall, or 75mm. The photo is taken from ground level, there is a concrete object in the background to the right slightly that is the outside of an old pond. as in built in 1930 pond. This whole area shown was replanted last year from the bulbs dug from it and new bulbs and transplanted irises and others from elsewhere.A photo showing a newly emerged tulip plant. It is a small slightly stripy looking green with red tinted leaf that is curled. The tip is red. There are some Euonymus leaves nearby that were plucked from the plant by a deer. Various decaying leaves, plants, and conifer debris present also.A photo showing a black plastic pot with stakes around the perimeter showing a small green sprout in the middle. It is a daffodil that is about 5mm tall and pale green.

Potted up the California Wonder bell peppers and a couple of Jalapenos that have been lingering in their small pot. 5 as planned into the tall square 3.5 inch pots and normal potting mix and 3 plus the 2 into gallon pots of old potting mix with rock phosphate and slow release high nitrogen fertilizer.

A photo showing two plant trays with pepper plants. Mostly sweet peppers but there are 7 that are hot Jalapenos. There is a small blue tub in the front of the right tray that has a cover on it and reflections of the LED grow lights in it. There's a lettuce plant in the upper right.

Where the magic happens and a closeup of the material used. This is a single fold swing-away binder for 1 inch binding.

Finished the second bag and fixed a hole in the bag used for a pattern too.

A photo showing a binding attachment on a walking foot sewing machine. It takes webbing or grosgrain or pre-folded binding material and folds it in half as it's fed in as you sew. The finished seam that has been binded is shown to the left. The coated screen side is up. The binding material is 1 inch polyester webbing. The sewing machine is blue.A photo showing the othe side of the binded seam. There is a piece of nylon webbing running perpendicular to the binding with it's end secured under the binding. This webbing covers the seam that joins the bag sides together and also serves as one of the attachment straps.

Making two feed bags for horses. Mostly a copy of one that is liked. Had to make a little tuck because... don't add your seam allowance to the circumference. The thing was my circle probably would have been ok but I didn't want too much extra so I cut inside the line. It's a re-purposed shade sail sort of thing which works too good as a sail if the wind blows even a little. The bottom is pvc coated heavy screen. My sister-in-law has horses. 🐴

A photo showing a horse feed back used for horse camping. It attaches with nylon webbing straps to something and flakes of hay are put inside it. It's made from a synthetic woven plastic of some sort for the sides and the bottom is a coated screen material to prevent water from accumulating. It is sand tan color. The bottom is attached with 1-inch binding from polyester webbing. It is being show hanging from a deck bench that is rustic blue.A photo from overhead looking down into the bag which shows the screened bottom.

Just when I think I'm going to get something done I see a good video making opportunity. 4 seconds of 240fps bees slowed down.

The geraniums are greening up slowly after being under the lights for a week. I've turned the lights down some since the lettuce seemed to be suffering as it got taller. The grape cutting from last year that had a verbena I saved in it is growing fast! The saved Red Marconi isn't doing much but I haven't fertilized or pruned it either. Extra details in ALT about tent and LED lights.

A photo showing 4 plant trays with various plants. There is lettuce in the lower left, geraniums in the upper left, and verbena, sweet pepper, grape, and Lychnis in the lower right. They are all raised up on a cage frame of cube storage things. This is inside a 4 foot square grow tent that is about 78 inches tall, That's 1200 mm square by 2000 mm tall. It has a full zippered front and two zippered half doors on each side along with vents on each side and one or two in the top. It has a covered see through window in the front too for peaking without opening up. It currently costs $80.99 USD for this exact tent right now. I've used it for two plant starting seasons now along with Spider Farmer SF1000 LED Grow Light panels with Samsung LM301H LEDs which are adjustable and rated at 100 watts each and currently priced at $89.99 USD. One panel covers a 3x3 foot area, 90x90mm, for the growth stage of plants. The 'blooming' stage is rated as a smaller area but this is for 'crop' blooming. 🪴 I currently have 4 of these panels in the tent that gives full coverage and will let the lights be raised up higher if needed. I use two others in place of 6 fluorescent tube lights for seed starting in a warmer area. I can go directly from indoors to full sun without plant damage with these lights.

The Red Marconi and Jalapeno peppers, or chilies, are getting their first true leaves. The California Wonder 300 are all up 100% from last years bought seed, 100% dud on saved seeds. I'll have to make sure to grow one of them well into a non green color for seeds.

A photo showing a Red Marconi pepper chili seedling that has it's first true leaves and has been started from seeds saved from 2024. It's is a sweet pepper variety that will grow a large long 3 sided pepper that will turn red in color. It is in a taller type 3.5 inch / 90mm square pot. It has a white plant stake that has 'red marconi' hand written on it.A photo showing a Jalapeno pepper chilli seedling in a square pot with a plant stake that says TAM Jalapeno on a printed label. It is from a saved seed from a 2024 pepper. It is starting to form it's first true leaves. The plant is about 50 mm tall. There are other seedlings around it in pots.A photo showing a 1020 tray with 13 square pots of Red Marconi and Jalapeno seedlings.A photo of a 1020 tray that has 5 small 50mm square pots that each have two California Wonder 300 seedlings in them. One of the seedlings is not quite up all the way. They have plant stakes with the name printed on a label.

The local deer that's been around a year or two in the winter and spring. It acts different and is always ... by itself. 🤣 It loves the Euonymus bushes. I always thought the long tips just had some winter kill until I realized something was eating the leaves.

A photo of a Mule Deer on March 18, 2025. It is facing the camera, ears turned to the sides, One rear foot lifted. It is between Euonymus and forsythia shubs. Beyond it is a small orchard with dormant fruit trees and brown grass.A photo of the mule deer with it's head in the Euonymus bush. It is facing to the right. It's color is sort of a gray brown with white and black markings.A photo of the mule deer standing towards the right and looking away and to the left. It has a white tail with a black tip, the back of it's head is ruffled a bit with it's winter fur. It's belly is white, it's legs are tan. There is a hazel in the foreground.A photo of the mule deer again eating on the Euonymus bush. It's tail is towards the camera and left a bit, it's ears are visible over it's rump. There are brown decayed flowering plants to it's right leaning over or sticking up to give food and cover for the birds.

One of the two new roosters from last years hatch. He was overseeing, or just lurking on the youngest hen that is a bit wild. It is a Swedish Flower Hen, as are all but one of the 19 chickens here.

A cropped photo of a big white rooster. He actually isn't unusually big and also isn't completely white. He is a Swedish Flower Hen. He has a golden looking mane and saddle, his tail has black feathers and white feathers. His body is white with black flowers and some buff color to it on his breast.
