@isotopp was it really that recent? Now trying to remember what I used before then. I know I used Oracle, SQL Server, #dBase and #DataEase (yuck), but I'm sure I used some #OpenSource RDBMS too.

Real ID another problem for travellers and people who enter federal buildings

youtube.com/watch?v=zedJ5DmWdW

#RealID #Bush #NineEleven #September #Federal #ID #dBase #Trump #BinLaden #Musk

The image shows a YouTube video page with a video playing in the center. The video features four individuals seated at a table with microphones, with a black flag bearing Arabic script in the background. Two individuals are wearing white turbans and traditional attire, while the others are in military-style clothing. The video is titled "Real Is Not About Keeping You Safe" and has 191K views, uploaded by "mismedia" 3 days ago. The video's thumbnail shows a similar scene with armed individuals. The YouTube interface includes a search bar, a list of related videos on the right, and various tabs such as "All," "Politics," and "World News." The video's thumbnail and the flag in the background suggest a connection to a specific group or ideology.

👴 Ah, the good old days of in 1984—a time when software was as clunky as the tapes this "video" probably came on. 📼 But hey, at least is throwing in a legal disclaimer that's longer than the actual content itself. 🎥🤦‍♂️

Update:

Successful upgrade of dBase! PostgreSQL running smoothly mastodon.social now runs on the spanking new database servers!

Small processing delays occur due to backlog of requests accumulated during downtime.

Patience is a virtue...

mastodon.social has incurred problems & is experiencing major outage.

PostgreSQL new major version running on new server hardware went awry.

There is a config issue with the upgrade.

Please just be patient and dont ask when the instance will be up again. Let the computer & server technicians work in calm so they can fix or roll back; either will result in the instance coming up again

@stefano

It's not a fix, but the at least the problem has been moved from your realm of control. Amazing how the NOT_SMART_PROGRAMMER refuses to understand proper programming practices.

A screenshot of a text-based story about a software developer who insisted on moving a project to the cloud to resolve issues. The move did not resolve the issues, and ultimately resulted in high cloud storage costs and the project's failure, due to unchecked logging and ignored alerts. The story concludes with the author expressing frustration over the situation.

@stefano

I was very quiet when I read the higlighted part, where you risked your health, crashing with your head to the ground unconcious, just to fix the mess again the NOT_SMART_PROGRAMMER caused again.

I have sent you all positive energy you need to get a smooth working ENV again with that programmer and all others on the whole

A screenshot of a dark-themed text document titled "IT Notes" shows a detailed account of an incident where the author became unwell and fainted after dealing with a system failure involving Sentry, a monitoring tool. The text describes shutting down Sentry, the author's fainting episode, and subsequent communication with the project manager and developers about the issue, including a discussion of moving to the cloud and the ongoing problems.

In India, dBase, FoxPro, etc. were popular early choices on the PC that remained popular for far too long:

Tip2 for #linkeddata #ui developers: if you've ever built forms using: #Access #FoxPro #Filemaker #DBase, #Paradox etc. revisit and reapply.

#clipper #msdos

@dirkdierickx Sweet, sweet memories...
My first real interaction with a programmable environment was with #dBase II on the old #DEC #Rainbow100 running #CPM 86/80 that my father had salvaged, when I was 12.

I didn't make much use of the database part of it, but I could write some simple games and scientific computations, inspired from #basic listings found in magazines (mostly my father's collection of "Science et Vie").

So apparently there's nothing like anymore, where you could design the db and the UI, and then export it all as a standalone app that connects to a local db file. Everything I find is either subscription web services, or the designing phase of the db is part of the final UI (which means that its user could potentially destroy the db by mistake). Honestly, that was one thing that 1980s was doing way better than now.

Doing some testing and tidying on a couple of #Python projects from a couple of years back, with a view to updating and extending them. If you coded MS-DOS business apps back in the early to mid 1990s, there's a chance some of this will look familiar…
