My experience of black mould is that it's generally endemic to a property. Home owners as well as tenants struggle with it.

There may be structural issues that are allowing damp to enter. These can be hard to identify, let alone fix, unless they are obvious.

Otherwise it's down to moist air and lack of adequate ventilation. Drying clothes, cooking, bathing etc all produce moisture.

Often, when people are out at work all day and it's cold in the evening, windows don't get opened. Especially when heating bills are high!

Working from home over the pandemic I saw the mould levels in my flat drop dramatically because I had at least one window open for most of the day, even in winter.

It was easier for me to do some laundry and stick it outside to dry, knowing I could get it in if it rained.

You need to keep treating mould. But again, you need to open windows to do this: anti-mould chemicals are toxic.

Dehumidifiers help.

Last winter I was forever wiping with bleach and soda to stay ahead of mold.

This past summer the wood got repainted with yacht varnish, which is now making the condensation bead ON the window- and porthole frames rather than soak INTO the wood.

Adding one dehumidifier and—if this proves itself over the coming weeks—a second one, will reduce the need to wipe everything down 2× a day or more.

My new #Meaco DD8L Junior dehumidifier is ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. It took 5 litres of water from the air.

This breaks the cycle: wipe condensation off the boat windows, dry the rag (adds humidity to the air), which then condenses on the windows.

This appliance generates a tiny bit of heat—good in winter when I'll be running it to combat damp.

The electric meter says it used £1.25 in 24 hours. That's less than I spend on briquettes, logs and kindling.

A Meaco DD8L Junior desiccant dehumidifier. It is white with a blue, ribbed stripe down the side. It has an air grille, a handle, and at the bottom, a water reservoir that pulls out like a drawer, for draining. Its white lead, or power cord, is plugged in to a 240v wall socket. The whole appliance is curvey, roughly 2 feet high, 18 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. It's sitting on the oak galley worktop on a red, foam-rubber placemat. Behind it are a soap dispenser and a refillable, clear-plastic water jug sitting on a folded tea towel. There's a bit of backsplash tiling on the wall. To the left is a bulkhead.

Next week a 330W dehumidifier arrives. It was recommended by a friend and should take care of the condensation on the windows.

Hopefully this appliance won't attempt to dehumidify the entire canal. 😅

If the appliance pulls a lot of moisture from the air, I'll look at wall-mounting it up high. There's an option to continuously drain the water through a hose—so it'd have to sit up higher than the canal's water level.
