A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect through 11 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2026, for Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, southern Itasca, Lake, Pine, and southern and central St. Louis counties. It could expand east into northwest Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula.

Visibility levels in the Northland around 8 p.m. on January 7, 206, are reduced from the maximum 10 miles due to fog forming in the region. They range from one-half mile in Ashland to 10 miles in Ironwood. Most locations are around 3 to 5 miles.

Fog will be dense at times throughout Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with visibility below one-quarter of a mile. The fog could also have freezing drizzle tonight when the temperature is below freezing.

NORTHLAND FORECAST FOR JANUARY 6, 2026:

A #storm system passing south of the #Northland Monday night will bring #dense #fog, #freezing #drizzle, and possible freezing #rain. #Winds remain light with low #temperatures in the upper teens and low 20s.

Tuesday will see some peeks of #sunshine return late after the fog dissipates. Highs will #warm to the upper 20s and low 30s with a light #breeze.

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until noon Tuesday, January 6, 2026, for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

Fog over the Northland Monday night and Tuesday morning will reduce visibility to under one mile at times. The drizzle inside the fog will also create at least a glaze of ice on surfaces and untreated roadways, making them slick.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Burnett, Pine, Sawyer, and Washburn counties in the Northland from 9 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2026, to noon Tuesday, January 6, 2026. This area has the best potential to see freezing rain showers from a storm system passing to the south of the region.

While everyone in the Northland will see at least a glazing of ice accumulation, it will be those south of Highway 2 that could have ice totals up to 0.10" by Tuesday morning.
