After building the #QRPLabs QMX+ transceiver I got a bit into #WSPR, #FT8 and #FT4 to see how far 3 to 5 Watts can get me.
There's not much else in the #hamradio world that puzzles me as much as the lack of support for compund or special callsigns in these modes. On one instance I couldn't make an FT8 call from my station EA8/DC6ST to a Russian ham visiting Belarus because the two compound callsigns did not leave any space for signal reports or even a "73" in the message.

One more attempt at #FreeDV tomorrow then I give up.
I got a brief blast of decoded audio on 60m this afternoon, but then the Linux laptop decided to unilaterally change the audio settings.
I think the FreeDV program is sound, but there seems to be something weird going on between my TS590s and the laptop.
It doesn't help that there's not a lot of activity to test the set up with

@KE0FFT Here's a tip that might save you some time/frustration: When transmitting digimodes, make sure the IC-7300 mode is USB-D (Data). If it's just USB, then receiving (audio to computer) works fine, and transmitting will work but the audio level from the PC to the radio on transmit is *way down*. I was having to get the PC volume up to 150% to get any reasonable power out from 7300. As soon as I switched from USB to USB-D, all behaved as expected.
I'm still not sure if I like it, but at least I give it a try: Lately I'm experimenting with #ft8 on #10m & #15m in #portable operations. I want to get a feeling for #digimodes.
It's surprisingly challenging doing this when being /p. And I have one big issue, maybe you can help me?
Why is it that in MOST of my QSOs on FT8 the OMs write at least 5 times their report and don't get my final „RR 73“ in the meantime? Even when getting a good report? Any ideas? I'm doing 15W with a #Xiegu G90.

@holgerschurig@emacs.ch @e_nomem How about digital modes using FLDigi - it's available many platforms and the Olivia mode.
The digital modes can be very narrow band and perform well at signal levels that won't support voice.
A friend in NZ had a good QSO on Olivia 8/250 with someone in Switzerland on 20m. He dropped power to 1W and still 100% copy. Olivia is a text chat mode.
Too much local noise? try using a remote KiwiSDR for reception.
JS8Call is good too.
I've got the #hamRadio set up turned on today.
Bimbling around on various bands with #FT8 - 10m seems to be shaping up nicely. 60m is completely dead.
I know that #digimodes have their detractors but they are easy to use, are reliable, and can easily be picked up and put down in the middle of doing other things.
Trying to setup the club's FT-991a so that I know how to use it. So far I've almost got #digimodes working. Control works, PTT works, and audio seems to be getting through. But it WSJT-X, the waterfall freezes after a couple of seconds and no decoding yet. Not clear why.
Finally getting around to setting up the new (~5 y.o.) shack computer to replace the old (~12 y.o) shack computer.

New toy arrived today...
QRP Labs QMX multiband CW and data modes transceiver, as designed by physicist Hans Summers.
I had previous kit from Hans - QDX multiband data modes transceiver, and two QCX single-band transceivers for CW (morse). This new kit rolls all into one. I shall test this tomorrow with an end-fed half-wave antenna for 40-10m.
The electronics design of Hans' transceivers is elegant and minimal, and their performance excellent.
@laren The joy of discovery is a big part of it. Automated is what FT8 feels like. It's nice to know you can establish contact, but without saying anything, does feel somewhat lacking. That said, it can be handy if combined with https://pskreporter.info to see how far you're getting, especially if there's noone at the other end because they're all in bed.
JS8Call (JS8) is nice - same low signal performance as FT8 but a chat mode.

Tried again, unsuccessfully, to get #FT8 to work on my #FT857 without sound coming from the speaker. Turning the volume down kills audio from the data port, as does unplugging the speaker. My audio interface, which worked fine with dataport audio, doesn't work with the external speaker jack... even though it works with an external speaker. Out of ideas. #digimode #digimodes
