So. If the thrust generated by these electrostatic ”propulsion” systems is real, what does it push against?

Earth’s magnetic field comes to mind. Surely electric fields won’t push against some kind of structure of space?

I guess we don’t actually know, which is super interesting.

It’s probably going to not give interstellar propulsion, but new #physics is always exciting!

⚡ The Science Behind Static Electricity 🔬

Static electricity is not just a spark—it’s a fascinating physical phenomenon with applications in materials science and energy harvesting.

New research on triboelectric charging is uncovering the true mechanisms behind this effect, challenging long-held assumptions.

When you send #electronic components in the mail, don’t use shrink wrap. One of these used DIMMs once inserted turned out to be broken and refused by an #hp #server. #esd #electrostatics #DIMM #DIMMsAreNotHam

Notes on #UAP Discussions : How would you introduce a class on "theoretical advances in novel propulsion systems " ?
if you were going to start with early history your candidates are primarily #Antigravity and #Electrostatics but a basic functional approach might start with concepts of mass levitation and associated phenomenologies like #Superconductivity, #Magnetohydrodynamics, #plasmas and #Solitons. Emphasis should be on the fact that there is more than one path to unconventional propulsion

@Sardonicus
This is turning a few concepts inside-out. I was so overjoyed to see a #cormorant on the lake by which I live, a few weeks ago - first #waterbird of the season!

Plus I once calculated that the *capacitive* ac currents through the legs of #birds perched on eht cables would be enough to electrocute them without any return path for the current. Maybe the #powerlines are off, and the #birds sense the electric field or its absence before perching? But near #Tokyo? I've only seen them perched on the earthed stay cable at the very top of the tower, on lines that I know are on. #physics #electrostatics

One of my favorite tools to use in the UO #Coffee Lab is the Malvern particle size analyzer which can characterize particles with sizes in the range of 0.1-2000 μm. I've used one like this extensively to measure #volcanic ash grains. Today, however, I am working with a (quite bad) medium roast coffee, exploring controls on particle agglutination. Turns out the processes that control volcanic ash aggregation and coffee clumping are pretty similar (i.e. #water and #electrostatics). #espresso

I suppose an #introduction is in order:

Hello! My name is Tomas. I am a research engineer at Umeå University, MSc in Computer Science. Currently working in the field of lunar #electrostatics ⚡. If all goes well we'll be sending a set of field mills to the lunar surface some time in 2019!

I'm also involved in the #amateurradio scene under the callsign SA2TMS.

I have some other accounts elsewhere in the fediverse, but this feels like a good place for seriousposting..
