The Animals | Animalism | (MGM) 1966

David Johnson reviews "Animalism," the final album by The Animals, highlighting lead singer Eric Burdon's vocal growth despite the band's split. While Burdon and drummer Barry Jenkins excel, the remaining members lack inspiration. The album features strong tracks like "Hey Gyp" and "Going Down Slow," but overall suffers from inconsistent performances.

Alternate Friday Music running the theme "Opportunity".

For the ancient Greeks, the personification of opportunity was Kairos (Καιρος; Caserus), an attractive youth with a lock of hair on his forehead. You could only seize Kairos as he approached …

I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere
So it's all in my head
And then
I heard her say one more time
"Spill the wine, take that pearl …"

I needed an inexcusable long time to realize we're not talking about someone, who does kind of professional dubbing for animals. Those animated movies often have all thouse silly noises… #WelcomeToMyWorld

The prompt is Ride

War, “Low Rider” from "Why Can't We Be Friends?" 1975

#EricBurdon was the front man for #TheAnimals, part of the 1960s #BritishInvasion of U.S. popular music. Sharing a love of the blues with many of their compatriots, after a string of hits and lineup changes and Eric’s move to #SanFrancisco, their music became more #psychedelic.

With the rest of his Animal bandmates still based in the UK, Eric joined with a group of #SouthernCalifornia musicians who had been playing #funk infused music to form #EricBurdonandWar, best known for the wonderfully odd spoken-word hit Spill the Wine. Burdon and the band parted ways, and the band developed more Latin flavor as War.

#LowRider slows and strips funk down to the bare bones - its chassis, if you will. I knew nothing of the #Chicano car culture it celebrates when its spare, metallic percussion, pumping #BassLine, and seductive vocals drew me in.

Friday Night on the Jukebox, and the theme is "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry".

Wine. Liebfrauenmilch!

Eric Burdon & War, "Spill the Wine" (1970, live 1970 I guess)

"She poured some of the wine
From the bottle into the glass
And raised it to her lips
And just before she drank it
She said
Take the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl …"
