Two stories that cover some government approaches. I am not surprised about the Home Office though - 11 years ago or so, I was seconded there for a year as we provided some technology. Part of my role included looking at the potential (and state) of new technologies, one of which was ‘predictive crime prevention’. Our report was suppressed. Too much hard evidence.

Recently I've been playing integrating strong aspects of both
- Immich - great app with cross-platform support, superb UI, very good #facerecognition, view older photos from Nextcloud via External Libraries
- Nextcloud - super filesync cababilities, Immich library sync via External storage
So far it works very well!

'Innenminister Alexander #Dobrindt (CSU) will mit Gesichtserkennung im Internet nach unbekannten oder untergetauchten Straftäter:innen fahnden. Dazu müsste er eine gigantische Datenbank aufbauen, erläutert nun ein Gutachten im Auftrag der Organisation „Algorithm Watch“ (AW). „Eine solche Datenbank mit allen frei verfügbaren Fotos aus dem Internet wäre jedoch eindeutig rechtswidrig“, sagt AW-Geschäftsführer Matthias Spielkamp.
Die #Bundesregierung arbeitet an zwei Gesetzen „zur Stärkung digitaler Ermittlungsbefugnisse in der Polizeiarbeit“. Bekannt wurden sie im Sommer auch als Dobrindts „Sicherheitspaket“. Ein zentraler Punkt ist die Foto-Fahndung mit Gesichtserkennung. Anhand eines Fotos soll im Internet nach weiteren Fotos der gleichen Person gesucht werden. So könnten unbekannte Verdächtige oder untergetauchte Straftäter:innen gefunden werden, hofft Dobrindt.
„Biometrischer Abgleich mit öffentlich zugänglichen Daten aus dem Internet“ nennt sich die Methode in den Gesetzentwürfen.'
