@PaulaMaddox @rasteri @polpo which makes total sense...

Personally, if I had like €1M I'd propably consider starting a company that basically builds a "#TinyRetro" with like a #FlashFloppy, #PicoGUS, #QuadFlop and all the other parts (incl. #IDE controller & IDE->SATA Adaptor) on a #MiniITX form factor (with one of those SOMs) and a spare #ISA slot which then fits into a compact case like the #M350 or similar.

Think of it as a faster alternative to the #NuXT...

  • And OFC I'd offer both #FreeDOS & @OS1337 as options (the latter one mostly for diagnostics and data recovery)...

This GoDRIvE is a clone of the Gotek USB floppy disk emulator, but specifically designed for the #Amiga and with a pass-through connector to the original floppy drive. Like the Gotek drive, it also uses the open source #flashfloppy firmware.

It's too bad I'd need to purchase two different GoDRIvE models for my A500 and my A4000, and they're pricey.

These Gotek floppy emulators with preloaded #FlashFloppy firmware can come in Beige and in Gray, but "Yellowed" Beige is the most popular color 😆

@wyatt and I guess a #FlashFloppy isn't an option as you want to read genuine physical media and not merely run stuff?

@wyatt And I guess you got niether time nor spoons to fiddle with a #GOTEK with #FlashFloppy?

Cuz these things are easy to install and moddable af!

Mal sehen.

@rc2014 IIRC, I had to make one a while ago to flash the #FlashFloppy firmware on the #Gotek floppy emulator, so they may not be totally useless and still very much #retrocomputing related 😉
Now, 75 of them...

Anyone up for a game of #Zork on a GM905 system from #GeminiMicrocomputers featuring a #z80 processor, 64K memory and dual #gotek floppy emulators running #FlashFloppy? Eh? 😜

No backup, no mercy.
I'm currently copying all the previously installed programs from the HDD back to floppy disk images. Cheers and thanks to the inventors of the #FlashFloppy software.

The #Gotek floppy emulator installed on the #Amiga 4000 just fried my USB stick with all my ADF files on it! 🔥

Good thing I smelled it burning and removed it right away. Also: I still have the ADF files on my laptop 😌

The #flashfloppy firmware still runs on the Gotek, but doesn't detect another known-good USB stick 😟

If you're a Flashfloppy/Gotek user, and have several different types of them around: *don't* keep your config file on any USB stick you'd want to share between drives. Unless you want all of your drives to be configured the same, which could mean upside-down displays and non-working controls ...

#RetroComputing #FlashFloppy #Gotek

Apparently, it is possible to buy a pre-flashed Gotek to work with #Tektronik #TDS700 #TDS600 scopes. For 170€ incl. shipping.

Lets see if I can do this for ~40€.

Ingredients:
1. #Gotek SFRM72-DU26 (~33€ shipped)
2. #flashfloppy firmware to make it 1.44 MB
3. OLED display (2.5€ shipped) 128x32px
4. 26 pin 1 mm "type B" 200 mm flat flex (3.5€ shipped)

The flat flex is required to reverse the pinning.
The OLED is optional but cheap and a huge debugging aid.
Flashfloppy can be flashed with two USB-A to USB-C cables, an USB-C extension Adapter (A to A cable) and a piece of wire, so basically free (had the parts handy).

The flat flex will arrive at ~end of december. So maybe this will be an xmas gift to myself...

Slimline gotek mit lose angestecktem OLED Display (das in das schmale Gehäuse passen sollte)

Hmm so I just ordered some #gotek floppy emulators to bring some 1990s #Tektronix scopes with slim line floppy drive to this millenia.

They should arrive in ~1 month and need flashing with #flashfloppy (the 720kB varaint costs half of the 1.44MB variant... do they charge by size??)

@sabi well OS/1337 is an attempt at building a minimalist #Linux so it should work with like 16MB RAM on an #i486 and up.

Here's a booting initial prerelease:

@Gammitin Yeah, the infamous #FlashFloppy is great!

@sabi I mean, you just use an 8bit ISA slot and just extend it a few centimeters so I guess abusing some 40-pin IDE io GPIO Cables and connectors should be fine...

  • Maybe use a Molex / FDD connector for the 12V & 5V power lines but unless you go with like PCI, VLB or PCIe you should be fine if you manage to keep the traces and cable lenghts equal within millimeters...

The #PicoGUS by @polpo does emulate a #AdLib quite well AFAIK, so yeah that should work out fine with the #NuXT...

  • Bonus points if you include two #Gotek #FDD Emulators with #FlashFloppy into the case for maximum convenience, a fanless #PicoPSU & AC/DC adaptor and some #SD-#HDD Emulator for convenient data transfer as I don't expect you to want to cram another ISA card with a NIC into it and have an SMB 1.0 NAS available...
