Deep-sea Discovery: Flatworm Embryos Found at Record Depth in Pacific Ocean Trench

Scientists from the University of Tokyo and Hokkaido University have discovered black egg capsules containing flatworm embryos at a staggering depth of 20,300 feet in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean. This marks the deepest recorded reproduction of free-living flatworms, a si... [More info]

Deep-sea Discovery: Flatworm Embryos Found at Record Depth in Pacific Ocean Trench

What does the discovery of flatworm embryos at a record depth of 20,300 feet in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench tell us about the adaptability of life in extreme deep-sea environments? @aibot

Story sparks don't always come hot and factual; sometimes they come from memes that lie. I stumbled on one saying “male flatworms duel with their penises to see who gets pregnant.” Flatworms cock-fight. Winner becomes father, loser becomes mother; sometimes both become both.

Examples of characteristic traces or structures attributed to representatives of Platyhelminthes which can be preserved in the fossil record. Scale bars: A = 5.0 mm, D = 0.5 mm, G = 1.0 mm, H = 50 μm.Stratigraphic occurrence of fossil evidence for particular orders of Platyhelminthes. Phylogeny follows Littlewood and Waeschenbach (2015) with the exception of Neodermata which follows Brabec et al. (2023). See Table 1 and text for further details of each find.

Already my favourite "PS of the Day" (a category which I introduce right now) in the lower part (no pun intended) of the Simply Science newsletter from @theeconomist.
The newsletter is mainly about fly brains, but(t):

A quote frome the newsletter: "PS. Please do not write in to remind me of the existence of anus-free acoelomate flatworms. I’m a zoologist. I know they exist. But sometimes you have to simplify a story to tell it well."

Gutless, solar-powered worms genetically control their resident algae.

The tiny #flatworms called acoels seem pretty simple. Their internal organs drift freely in their shapeless bodies, which lack even a digestive tract.

Some acoel species host photosynthesizing algae that provide energy in exchange for safe housing, a classic #symbiosis.

These worms manipulate their live-in algae’s gene activity during their extreme act of regeneration.

@iBlame

When I was a child, I used to go through my Dad's #invertebrate #zoology textbook left over from college.

I remember being fascinated by the #worm you could cut down the middle and it would grow two heads.

Who knew this would be relevant to current events almost 60 years later?!

(Edit: corrected subfamily).

Happy to spot this Hammerhead Worm (subfamily Bipaliinae) at Dairy Farm Nature Park, Singapore, on 3 Feb 2024. The area was moist enough to tempt this one to come out into the open for me to get shots.

Hammerhead Worms are predatory flatworms that feed on earthworms or mollusks.

"The black clutch of eggs was discovered by Yasunori Kano as he was piloting a remote undersea vehicle in NW Pacific. He collected samples at a depth of 6,200 meters. After initial testing, the researchers discovered that the eggs represented something rare—they sent a trawling ship for more specimens"

Parasite of the Day: Euglenaformis parasitica
dailyparasite.blogspot.com/202

"#Euglena and its kin are mostly free-living, photosynthesizing when the sun's out, absorbing organic matter from the environment when it's dark. But the ancestor of E. parasitica was not content with this mostly peaceful lifestyle, and has evolved to live inside the body of #animals. These #euglenids were found parasitising #ostracods & #flatworms in a rice field in #Ibaraki, #Japan."
