'Pond life' is sometimes used as an insult applied to particularly contemptible people but I feel that this is unfair to actual pond-dwelling creatures which, by contrast, are mostly harmless and frequently fascinating lifeforms.
Frogspawn is a case in point. You can see that our tiny garden pond is full of the stuff. Zoom in and you can tell that the embryos are starting to elongate towards the shape of a tadpole.

6 things from my garden, 3x2 grid. Top left: dark purple little winter iris, each flower has 3 petals, each has yellow and black detail to draw in the pollinators. Top mid: a pair of frogs, dark one on top of a light brown one. I think she's berthing spawn, they sit in a bed of frogspawn. Top right: Small (5mm) white bells on 3 strands of flower stalks, sit on the pieris bush. Low right: tulip Turkmenistan. A species type, small flowers (3cm), 5 white spread out petals, yellow centre, very delicate. Low mid: small tete-a-tete narcissi , 3 blooms looking perfectly yellow in my courtyard window box. Low left: 5 hellebore blooms, and their green leaves. They range from white to a gentle pink.

Looking down onto a small section of garden pond. There are green plants, stalks, shadows, ripples, bubbles, reflections. In the centre a mass of newly laid frogspawn - little round globules with black dots inside. Just below and slightly to the right is a frog. Its body is just under the surface of the water but its head is sticking out.

Ponds and puddles UK-wide start to fill with frogspawn in early spring – the ideal spot being shallow, well-vegetated and partially shaded. Frogs often return to breed at the pond where they were spawned, but while they lay vast numbers of eggs in jelly-like clusters, only about one in 50 will survive to become adults. The young fall prey to everything from dragonfly larvae and newts to water boatmen, birds and hedgehogs.
