How to win the war for the soul of the internet and build the Web We Want.

"Illich’s thesis is that technology and its derived tools should serve people in a way that enhances their freedom, creativity, independence, and will.

The distillation of those principles on the web through manual code, hand-built social networks, and blogs, points luminously to one answer to the question of how the Internet can best serve humans:
it’s..."

Dare to be inconvenienced.

We have been trained to prioritize "seamless" experiences over ethical ones. But every convenience has a hidden cost, whether it is labor rights, environmental impact, or the erosion of privacy.

Efficiency is a metric for machines, not for a meaningful life. When we stop choosing products solely for their convenience, we reclaim our agency. We choose local over global, human over algorithm, and sustainable over instant.

What would happen if we stopped using services that do very little good for society, even if it means taking the long way around?

Shared public spaces

Arnhem Central Station makes people look small

During my visit to Arnhem — home turf of my photo buddy Kevin — I decided to give street photography another go. Kevin makes it look so easy. With his tiny Fuji mirrorless and a 24mm lens, he just hip-shoots away and somehow always nails it.

Me? Not so much. My Canon 5DsR with the Sigma 24–70 Art isn’t exactly what you’d call “discreet.” Every click sounds like a miniature thunderclap echoing through the station. So instead of blending in, I hide in corners, under staircases, or anywhere people don’t look.

That’s where I found this shot — standing beneath the staircase, drawn first by the sweeping architectural lines. Then came the couple, walking right into the frame. Kevin called it “fishing” — waiting patiently for the scene to complete itself. It’s new to me, but I have to admit… it works.

Sometimes photography isn’t about chasing the shot. It’s about waiting for life to wander into it.

Concrete Perspective

From up high, perspective changes everything. Standing atop the Spoorpark tower, I looked down and noticed how geometry and life align in the most unexpected ways. The pavement below—made up of large 4x6 meter concrete slabs—formed clean intersecting lines that seemed to guide movement through the frame. Then, almost perfectly on cue, a woman entered the scene from the lower right corner, her attention fixed on her phone.

Through the Canon 5D Mark IV paired with the Sigma 100–400, I framed the shot so that one diagonal ran straight toward her, while another crossed it, forming an “X” that almost marked her path. It’s fascinating how urban design, when viewed from above, becomes a study of pattern and rhythm—how our daily movements trace invisible geometries that we rarely notice from the ground.

"Cities are often obsessed with the big things — budgets, master plans, capital projects — but the prosperity of a city depends on the small things. The way a building meets the street. The way light falls on a bench. The way a park feels after dark. Those details shape whether people feel safe, whether they linger, whether they come back."

The #Humanscale series is, IMO, one of the most important publications in the history of modern civilization. I own the 1/2/3 set, but I never got around to buying the other two sets.

I cannot stress enough how important understanding the scale of human bodies is for all #design, #engineering, and public #policy disciplines.

Architecture holds power beyond the creation of buildings - it is a practice that shapes how people live, interact, and thrive within their communities.

Do you think the current trend of overly large home Halloween decorations is a knock-on effect from car culture? Because human-scale decorations are unnoticeable in a car, people have resorted to building car-scale decorations akin to road signs and billboards?
