Goodbye Debian

I realized I am not be able to troubleshoot #Debian anymore, now it is so tight integrated with #systemshit — sorry I meant #systemd — that I am not be able anymore to understand what is going on under the hood.

Once if you had an issue you could go on the /var/log/ directory and look for any logs that sounded familiar like kern.log; now you can't, there are still some logs but not the ones that you need.

Now there is this ugly #journalctl that I can't find a way to learn, my brain is not wired to work that way, it is counter intuitive and you need to learn how to use it. With regular plain text logs you don't need to learn anything, you can open it with less, cat, grep or any other fancy TUI e and GUI editor, everything was clear and easy to grasp.

I repeat the concept: clear and easy to grasp. Exactly, old century operative systems were meant to be clear and easy to grasp. Modern systems don't, it has put a lot of effort to push away normal people making everything quite convoluted.

In the past to avoid to reflect my personal biases on my kids, I decided that I would install on their computers Debian instead of #Devuan, but since I am also their computers' administrator, I need to switch to something that I use actively and I know how to fix it when problems come out; therefore when the next Devuan release will be available I will switch their laptops to Debian and I will be finally out from the frustration of using an OS with systemd.

I just noticed that journalctl has this shortcut (Shift + f) to change from present log (up to a point) to live logs (same as tail -f)

Bei Update der ersten "Muttermaschine" gab es Probleme, fehlerhafte Abhängigkeiten. Dank Fehlermeldung und logs ließ sich das beheben. Der #xfce Desktop ist bei jedem Start abgestürzt - das Löschen des session cache hat geholfen. Hierbei hatte ich einige Zeit zu knobeln, um es einfacher zu haben nutze ich jetzt #ksystemlog. Drauf gekommen bin ich nur, weil der shell Befehl xfdesktop nicht vollständig ausgeführt wurde.

Is it somehow possible to specify additional options to #journalctl's grep function?
I usually need some sort of `grep -C` for logfiles and it looks like that isn't possible using only journalctl options.

See many rotated files by journalctl, and ALL are prefixed with either "system" or "user-USERID." Examples below:

Q.1) When the user-5678 su -, and root is operating the system, would journalctl log in user-5678?

Q.2) If root were logged in to system, would journalctl create logs prefixed with "user-0"?

Rareori ceva nu merge bine cu Linux, dar asta nu înseamnă că sistemul de operare este imun la probleme. Din când în când, voi instala un serviciu sau o aplicație nouă și apoi voi încerca să o pornesc cu comanda:

sudo systemctl start NAME

NAME este numele aplicației sau al serviciului.

Au existat cazuri în  care serviciul să nu pornească sau să funcționeze corect. Când se înâmplă acest lucru, încotro vă îndreptați? Puteți întotdeauna să verificați fișierele […]

Ранее, я уже писал статью о различных способах, которые мне приходилось использовать для чтения логов, и к какому решению в итоге пришел. Хотя прошло не так много времени, с тех пор приложение не переставало развиваться. Узнав о том, что на Хабре проходит сезон Open source , мне показалось это отличным поводом подчеркнуть, что именно стало причиной для создания данного инструмента, а также рассказать немного подробнее про основные и новые функции.

I find it mildly amusing that #journalctl boot indices are all zero (the current boot) or negative (boots that happened in the past).

This would seem to imply that, at some point, they plan to add a way to see logs from boots with positive indices.

Both on my laptop (Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H, Z16 ThinkPad) and my desktop (Ryzen 9 3900X), #kernel 6.13 causes the machines to freeze after a while without reporting anything meaningful in #journalctl. The laptop freezes completely, while the desktop continues to work, but can no longer start new processes. Back to 6.12, which works perfectly on both machines. #manjaro #linux #gnome

Is systemd still considered controversial in the Linux/Unix community? I have to say I would feel a bit grumpy if I didn't have access to journalctl. I'm still ok with parsing logfiles but there is alot to like about journactl. Would like to hear your take.
