I've diversified my search options. I now search websites directly by adding a website's search field directly to Firefox. Then, I search Curlie. As a last resort, I use Kagi. Using this method should get me to be less dependent on search engines and use the cheaper $5 Kagi subscription.
Another thing I do to slow down searches is I log my Kagi queries to my bullet journal.
Just started using @kagihq and it's refreshingly focused on providing good searches. I think I'll just use the $5/mo. plan, though, and bullet journal my searches to keep them intentional and minimal.
My only gripe with Kagi is that their browser is not free software/"open source".
Is @kagihq the same #Kagi that used to do #shareware registrations?

Hinweise hier im fediverse hatten mich neugierig gemacht und ich nutze kagi seit einigen Wochen: die Qualität der Suchergebnisse ist eine Wohltat.
The truth about "free" search and why it's a trap:
Kagi's domain blocking lets you banish these results from your search feed for good 👇

I tested #Kagi for 4 days and already finished the 100 free searches available... Aaargh I feel like I didn't have enough searches to try it extensively.
Plus, at this rate (20/30 searches per day), the basic 5$ tier is not enough, and 10$ for a search engine seems off to me (not that I don't value the tool, it's the idea of spending 10$ a month on a subscription that turns me off).
As for now, I don't feel so impressed like I thought I would be (coming from #DuckDuckGo). It's true: the searches are a bit better that DDG (but not largely better). The lenses are interesting (but had not enough searches to try them), so is the tool that pins, increases or decreases the importance of a certain website in your personal search results.
The big issue I had was with the overall theme, especially in the results page, which seems less immediate to navigate compared to competition. I don't know how to describe it, but something always felt off, the accent color for instance. I also tried multiple custom themes but nothing gave me that peace of mind that I have with #DDG's default theme. The font always felt too small or too big, no ideal size in between.
The #AI assistant is really good (yes, I'm probably the only #Mastodon user that happily uses #LLM's from time to time), and I think it's way better than #duck.ai (first time I hear about the #Kimi2.5 model, for instance).
All in all, I don't know if I'll ever pay for Kagi, but if I do it'll probably be thanks to the AI assistant page (the "#Code" model was really good!), not the searches in itself.
Okay #Kagi, when I type "gmail with emacs 2026", I don't want posts about Windows 7. *sigh*
"The AI-powered scam content army is here, and it's buying Google Ads."
"Use a search engine that doesn't show sponsored results at all. I use Kagi, which is paid and ad-free."

@kagihq is often pitched as a better web search than Google search. I'm here to tell you they're so much more than that: Kagi is a better Google than Google full stop
In the aughts and '10s, google used to make cool, nerdy products and features just because they were cool and nerdy. They didn't need a better reason than that. They don't really do that anymore but it was good times
So here's the deal. Go to translate.kagi.com and choose "reddit speak" for the to: language. Do this in a desktop browser because you get a different UI. Thank me later
This is at least as cool and internet-nerdy as peak aughts Google ever was. Don't snooze on Kagi
