Ok so #linuxaudioproduction update:
- Bitwig is really cool
- there are enough Linux-native synths and DSP plugins these days to do pretty much anything (so long as you have the expertise to know what it is you actually want to do)
- "physical modeling" synth pianoteq is at least as good as any sampled piano, and is Linux native
👍
- HOWEVER orchestral sample libraries are still very much lacking, which is a bit of a kick in the nuts ngl

alright, party's over, i've absolutely fucking had it with windows at this point. been daily driving fedora at work for a while now but i haven't dared to do the same on my home pc and my studio pc. i think my recording laptop would be a good start.

recording engineers of the linux community, how have your experiences been? especially curious about the reaper linux build, vst and device support (especially ADAT), any issues you've run into, etc

Side note:

Found a post that iK Multimedia doesn't support Linux because too few people use Linux for audio production. Well duh, if there is no plugin support one can't use it.

And i heard statements like this around the industry. I get the problems of porting but the excuse is so lame. Well just make it workable in wine then, will ya?!?

Update # 3

Skipped Waves and iLok in lack of fun doing for today. Tried to get ToneX to work. Got the manager working but installing causes issue in not finding the download folder. I assume some kind of sandboxing (read smth like this in a post).

So still no waves, STL, or iK.

Unfortunately i rely heavily on these. ToneX and STL Libra is a big part of my business model.

DO LINUX SUPPORT IN THE FIRT PLACE FFS!!!

Update # 2

Found a post on the Waves Powershell issue. So waves should be doable.

What i read about iLok and wine/Linux doesn't make me smile at all though. I don't have many licenses but the ones i have are important. STL ... just saying.

Will call it a day now and see where things go tomorrow.

Ok update:

Someone here who knows how to get powershell in a wine prefix? Seems like the Waves Central need PS to execute.

Weekend project. Checking out yabridge and porting win VST to linux. So far so good for natives atm.

next: iLok, Waves stuff. If anyone has experience i'm very open for tips.

Any settings to minimize wine-caused cpu load?

Today I discovered Audiorelay, a tool that let's you use your smartphone as a mic in your computer. I don't think it's FOSS though. Does anyone know of any FOSS alternatives that work on Andoind and Linux?

I've been using the Calf Plugins for years but recently was really impressed by the Calf Limiter when mastering a track recently. I was using it to basically try get that loudness that is typically expected (in my opinion) on platforms like Soundcloud etc.

Last time I checked it wasn't possible.
Right now I am in the highly complicated process of making dinner, but afterwards have to add some super evil special FX to a large audio file but maybe afterwards I can just check the answers and relax - that's the stupid idea here 🙂

So now that Audacity 3.x (and its forks) are out:

Can I finally automate a cutoff filter (or whatever parameter of whatever effect) over time or does this still only work for volume and balance?

If not it's back to my 1337 pirate copy of CoolEdit2000... Nooo seriously, which Audioeditor would you use for the task instead? On Linux?
I'm thinking Reaper but I should only need an audio editor not a DAW for this, right?!

I have an old Roland vs-840 portastudio and a Zip drive. I would like to transfer the audio from zipdisc to my Linux desktop and mix in Reaper. However, “the data on VS-840 Zip discs is proprietary and is not compatible with any computer software and can't be converted.” Of course I could record out of the audio output but this annoys me. Don’t suppose anyone knows of any conversion software? #askfedi #musicproducers #hackers #FOSS #linuxaudio #linuxAudioProduction #drm_free
