Github CEO didn't urge you to "Embrace AI or leave Github", he urged you to "Embrace AI or stop being a programmer".

The action we should decide from that quote is not leaving Github or promote Codeberg ; we should all have done these things long ago anyway.

The actions we should decide from that provocation is to stand against anyone telling us how to do our job (= micromanagement) and anyone who predicts/dictates the future based on their financial interests. We should show them how diverse our practices are, how being a programmer is much more than coding, and how wrong and ridiculous they are.

Today we're told that they're changing the license and we need to use GPT 4.1 unless we can justify a premium price for using other models.

I wish they'd just admit they want to micromanage this shit.

Ah, the semiannual vague-threat/browbeating email from the administration telling us that--despite said administration's nearly rabid refusal to consider the possibility of paying faculty according to the number of hours they work--we have to work a certain number of hours. Or rather the administration wants us to.

Let's see their tactics this semester:

  • Students have a right to take their final exam at the arbitrary time scheduled by some office on campus? What right is that? Is it up there with trans rights, civil rights, and other inalienable ones? Where and how was this right decided?

  • Students are at a "decided disadvantage" when a prof gives them an exam a couple of days early! Wow. That's big news. Disadvantaged in what way? Research, please.

  • The old standby "expected." This is where admins want to say "required" or "mandated" but the union has won court cases saying there are no particular days or hours we need to be on campus, except actual class sessions (and here are exceptions for illness, etc., though the admins are working to eliminate those).

  • It's an "Approved final exam policy", all right. Approved by administrators and a committee/working group with key members appointed by administrators. Those administrators really do not like democratic processes, but they like to pretend their mandates (I mean expectations) are democratically driven.

The end of the semester is in sight! As we head into Final Exams next week, this is a reminder about [our] approved Final Exam Policy. [BOLD]Faculty are expected to hold exams during finals week OR hold a class session during the assigned final exam time.[/BOLD]

Final Exam week is counted into the contact time required by the [State] Department of Education. The policy states, “Final examination week is part of the regular semester and should be interpreted in that context. Students who are asked to take final examinations (variously interpreted as terminal, non-comprehensive, etc.) before the regular examination week are put at a decided disadvantage. Faculty members who do not give final examinations during the regular period scheduled for such examinations are expected to use that period for review or to utilize the time in some formal way in a classroom setting.” 

[BOLD]All students have the right to take their final examination at the time scheduled by the Registrar’s office.[/BOLD]  The Spring 2025 Final Exam schedule can be located on the Registrar’s Office website.

I ask that you be sure you are adhering to our campus policy: faculty are expected to be on campus during finals week. The full policy, including the resolution of a 3-finals-in-one-day conflict, can be found in the Policy Library.
