Today is a good day. Today is the birthday of the Montréal Protocol.
Adopted on September 16, 1987, and ratified by every UN-member state, this landmark treaty stands as the shining example of what humans can achieve when science, diplomacy, and collective action unite for our common good.
A mere 10-15 years after researchers had come to a consensus that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were the cause of an expanding hole in the #ozone layer, international diplomacy defeated corporate interests in a battle for our future.
CFC emissions were reduced and eventually banned. The result of the Protocol is an ozone layer hole recovering, no longer expanding.
But aside from the tangible outcome, this day is about what the Montréal Protocol represents: facing uncomfortable truths, recognising the urgency, setting selfish interests aside in the pursuit of shared interests.
It’s #solidarity. We did it once, we can do it again.
Enjoy your #MontrealProtocol day, everyone.
Weatherwatch: Repair of ozone layer is making the planet warmer, study finds
Scientists say ozone is warming Earth by 40% more than expected but that repair is still right thing to do
The repair of the Earth’s #OzoneLayer has been a success, but a new study reveals a downside: #ozone is warming the planet up to 40% more than originally anticipated.
Bill Collins from the University of Reading and his colleagues used a computer model to project the amount of warming associated with changes in ozone between 2015 and 2050, taking into account changes in humidity, clouds and surface reflectivity. If we continue to implement the air pollution controls mandated by the Montreal protocol in 1987 their results, which are published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, suggest that the healing of the ozone layer will create more warming, cancelling out most of the #climate benefits from stopping production of ozone destroying chemicals such as #CFC's and #HCFC's.
By 2050 they estimate that ozone will be the second-largest contributor to warming after #CarbonDioxide.

@coleens_ lets just say the #MontrealProtocol was successful because the #decisionmakers of it's time would've felt the alternative within very few years and in their #lifetime.
@sundogplanets TIL about the #MontrealProtocol - thank you!
Proof that #EnvironmentalPolicy works: "During the peak of #ozone depletion season, the 2024 area of the #OzoneHole ranked the seventh smallest since recovery began in 1992, when the #MontrealProtocol, a landmark international agreement to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals, began to take effect."

Oh, No!
You're mistaken. We canned hairspray in the 80s and it's all fixed now.

"We need to initiate discussions as soon as possible. With space debris, it took us 20 or 30 years to define a solution. With [the satellite air pollution] problem, if we move on the same kind of timescale, it might be too late."

Might have gone unnoticed among all the bad news these days: the #OzoneHole over #Antarctica is on a good track to recovery. We might be back to 1980s conditions around the 2060s.
Thanks to the #MontrealProtocol, the most successful environmental agreement ever!

The ozone hole above Antarctica will keep opening up each spring for decades to come
"The ozone layer is a vital planetary boundary that protects all life on Earth from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation.Ozone depletion is also linked with climate change, and there are other emerging issues which could affect ozone recovery. These include more frequent mega-wildfires due to climate change, emissions from rocket launches and more satellite debris burning up in the upper atmosphere. Recent research shows mega-wildfires such as the Australian bushfires of 2019 can contribute to ozone depletion."

Leah Stokes (Prof climate + energy policy UCSB,
working at/with Rewiringamerica.org )
interviewed #KamelaHarris on Oct 18 2022 on climate policy and her personal climate history.
Two things I recall after watching it:
1) Kamala thinks the Australian administration is climate-aware... 😁 #AUSPol
(And I thought: "oh well, this wrong verdict certainly shows the little grasp she has of what is really necessary to combat climate change...)
2) The #KigaliAgreement was signed and ratified by the US when Biden took office.
It's an extension to the #MontrealProtocol that curbed #ozone-killing emissions. The Kigali Agreement aims to phase down (not out) a cooling agent or compound called HFC which – if phased OUT – could reduce global warming by 0.5°C.
Kamela's ecological awareness has permeated through her professional career. So it's doubly sad to realize how badly she misjudges what needs to be done regarding climate. Because she might THINK that she's got it – due to her long ecol-history. But she really doesn't. And she doesn't know that she doesn't know, and therefore likely won't realize soon enough that she doesn't.

Yes, I agree it's a valid question and line of reasoning; however, it doesn't work for this conversation because the IVT you are trying to use doesn't account for the global impact of the actions. There is no acceptable amount of ODSs to be released.
You are also overlooking that it is not only bad for the environment to release ODSs, it's also against the law.
Hell, it's one of the few things almost all countries in the world agree is a bad thing to do.
Freon units stopped being produced 1/1/2010. Part production stopped on 12/31/2019.
The average life of an AC unit is 10-15 years; if you maintain it well, you can extend that a bit.
So, your unit is at least 14 years old. I think it's okay to retrofit or replace it.
Manufacturing a new AC unit is what 5 metric tons of CO2?
Running a new AC unit will be ~2 tons of CO2/year.
A 14-year-old unit that doesn't have the same energy consumption requirements as a new unit I'm sure uses much more than that (depending on the energy source of course)
1 ton of HCFC-22 (R22) has the same impact as 1,810 tons of CO2.
.5kg of R22 leaked ~= 1 ton of CO2, but this is just the warming effect, R22 will also deplate the Ozone.
So you are looking at least 3 tons of CO2/year released by your old busted unit.
So roughly, starting in year 3, it will be more environmentally responsible.
But this is a bad way to look at it; you are going to have to replace the AC unit or retrofit it regardless, so all you are doing is trying to make a case to unnecessarily harm the ozone for a couple of extra years so YOU receive a better value.
@sundogplanets Personally, I think that absurd amoumt of #OzoneLayer - depleting #trash should be illegal and banned as per #MontrealProtocol appendix.
But I doubt this will happen since we don't even get the bans for #CFC11 enforced and #Aluminium as well as other #Debris will deplete #Ozone even harder because they stay in the upper layers of the atmosphere way longer...
