Here are four visitors to our house this week. It's the first time I've seen this wee native moth species, Crypsitricha mesotypa.

I just checked and I'm now up to 101 species, mostly insects, that I've found and photographed inside our house.

I only got this one photo of a NZ brown evening moth. It's a large brown moth, sitting here on a wall in our house about to fly. When it's wings are out, it's about 14 cm across.

I was thinking this evening about how our home, of two working biologists, is not quite a normal home.

Some evidence:

1) Boxes of electronic gadgets on the floor (in this case AudioMoth audio recorders for bird monitoring).

2) Office drawers containing drying pinned moths.

3) *Lots* of recently recharged batteries to drive assorted gadgets, currently lying on our hallway floor.

4) Bookshelves of mostly nonfiction books.

The intersection of Nieuwe Herengracht and Entrepotdok is located in Amsterdam’s Plantage district, a neighborhood with a strong historical and cultural character. 🏛️

Nieuwe Herengracht, part of the city’s famous canal system, extends from the Herengracht and runs between the Amstel River and the Scharrebiersluis near Entrepotdok. Built in 1️⃣6️⃣5️⃣8️⃣, it marks the eastern edge of the canal belt. ⛵️

At this junction, several bridges help connect different parts of the neighborhood. The “Walter Süskind Bridge” (no. 237) links Nieuwe Herengracht to the Weesperzijde, serving as a key crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists. Nearby, the “M.S. Vaz Dias Bridge” (no. 238) and the “Hortus Bridge” (no. 239) also play an important role in keeping the area well connected. 🌁

The building across the street that this little girl is looking at was built in 1️⃣8️⃣7️⃣8️⃣. The apartment block is located in the “Zaagpoortbuurt” (literally: ‘sawgate area’). 🪚🚪

Marnixstraat is a main road between two famous squares (Leidseplein and Haarlemmerplein). The street has a mix of old and modern buildings, including some from the 19th century. A great deal of it used to be part of the old city walls. 🏡 🏛️

I usually avoid posting pictures of people here, but here’s an exception—an anonymous photo of my daughter, taken in our old stairwell in 2017. 👧🏻💕

Marnixstraat, Zaagpoortbuurt, at the border of “De Jordaan”.

The houseboat “Rumah Saya” is a motor tjalk located at the intersection of Keizersgracht and Amstel. This historic vessel, built in 1893, measures approximately 16.7 meters in length and 3.7 meters in width. ⛵️

In Indonesian, rumah saya literally means “my house” (rumah = house, saya = I/my). In Malay, it has the same meaning. 🇮🇩🇲🇾🏠

The houseboat is situated in a prime location, close to the “National Opera”, “Koninklijk Theater Carré”, “Museum De Hermitage”, and the “Magere Brug”. 📸
