L'ho trovato chiaro e diretto: certo, la definizione è perfettibile, ma almeno ci ricorda quello che si dovrebbe fare con tutto quello che oggi si chiama #Open e non lo è. #openwashing è sempre dietro l'angolo, cambiano i temi, ma rimane sempre un problema.
Lo vedevo nel mondo #OpenSource, in quello #OpenData poi, e ora in questo: la lotta continua.

A new #Trump executive order defines a "gold standard" for federally-funded science.

Three points for now, and more later.

1. Most of the standards (3.a.i-ix) are borrowed from #OpenScience or conventional pre-Trump science. So far, so good.

2. Implementing the new standards is left to Trump-appointed political operatives (3.c).

3. With minor exceptions, agencies must make public "the data, analyses, and conclusions" on which they make policy (4.a.i.A).

More on the 3d point. In Trump's first admin, the Environment Protection Agency (#EPA) and Dept of the Interior required that all data used in policymaking be open. That seemed to be a laudable #OpenData policy. But it meant that EPA couldn't set policy based on private medical data on the harms caused by air- and water-borne pollutants. It was a head-fake to open in order to relax policies protecting the environment. That's why I called it #OpenWashing. Point 3 above is a big step in the same direction.

Note that #Project2025 (p. 439) calls for this kind of openwashing, specifically at the EPA. The new Trump EO acts on that recommendation and extends it to all federal agencies.

@jacob yes, and #OpenWashing is a real issue not just with #AssholeLicensing as seen with #Redis & others using #SSPL as a literal #AssholeLicense which are just "#SourceAvailable" instead of #OpenSource, but actual #donations.and #contributions.

• Try to convince any C-level decisionmakers to donate even 1% of the equivalent of licensing the #CCSS equivalents of the #FLOSS deployed will get one laughed at, and suggesting 10% threatened woth getting fired.

Initially published in April 2010, Steve Jobs' "Thoughts on Flash" is a good reminder that when an ecosystem claims to be "open", you have to be cautious.

Apple's ecosystem is mostly closed, but they are honest about that fact.

While many systems fighting to gain market share claim to be "open", while being little more than APIs subject to use restrictions, which can be closed further at any time.

@opendatabund hm, hm. Können sie auch nach etwas anderem dargestellt werden? In den Downloads aufgeschlüsselt nach Gemeinde sind die meisten Werte nicht angegeben, es fehlen absolute Zahlen zu Verbrenner/E-Fahrzeugen. In meinen Augen mehr #OpenWashing denn #OpenData. Schade.

So annoying that here at #ICSE2025, llama models are invariably referred to as "open source" in talks and papers. #OpenWashing by Meta seems to be winning... 😞

Heute ist in Hamburg AHOY! - Das Treffen der digital Rückständigen.

Großes Mitleid erzeugt schon die Website. https://ahoy.eu/europe Man sieht, es ist von Menschen, die ganz toll modern sind (und das sogar nach Ende der Postmoderne) und ihre Unfähigkeit gern an Menschen, die noch unfähiger sind, verkaufen wollen. Ein zu allen Zeiten gewinnbringendes Geschäftsmodell.

Die Workshops, die man selbst dann bezahlen muss, wenn man sie von zu Hause anschauen will, werden von Bluesky Mitarbeitern gehalten und greifen heiße Eisen an. Themen wie "Wie binde ich Videos in Bluesky ein" (Pro Tipp: Ctrl V) oder "Muss ich mir wirklich immer nach dem Kacken den Hintern abwischen?" lassen Großes erahnen.

Ob Bluesky wirklich eine europäische Alternative zu Bluesky und Co ist, bleibt abzuwarten (Pro Tipp: Nein). Ich kann es kaum erwarten, dass europäische Werte und (wichtig!!!) Regulationen einsetzen, was soll da schiefgehen? Seit 5:45 wird nun zurückgeschossen.

It's extremely unfortunate that a small minority in the #OpenSource community who have previously spoken very favourably about Meta's #Llama, or even gone as far as labelling it as Open Source, are claiming the OSI's OSAID is what enabled #Meta's #Openwashing.

Meta's Open washing predates the OSAID, and OSI have been fighting it for almost two years now! The OSAID is the best tool to win that fight.

Yes. I called this #openwashing because it used the halo of openness or transparency to block regulations that would protect the environment and climate. (Medical studies on the harms of airborne pollution could not fully open their data, for reasons of medical privacy.) Here are the #OATP items I tagged with that sort of openwashing during the first #Trump administration.

But note that #Project2025 calls for both (1) this older kind of #EPA openwashing and (2) direct, unembargoed #OpenAccess (or #PublicAccess) to EPA-funded research, echoing the Biden-era #NelsonMemo. See p 439: "Add teeth to long-standing executive orders, memoranda, recommendations, and other policies to require that EPA regulations are based on transparent, reproducible science as well as that the data and publications resulting from taxpayer-funded activities are made immediately available to the public."

Anyone who? I find the use of 'open source' in most cases (including Meta) is a marketing choice, exactly as for the word open in OpenAI company name. Of course Meta models are surely less closed than those of OpenAI, but that's all.
