This product looks really cool. Too bad it's *not open source*. They claim they will distribute the design files under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, NC stands for noncommercial, so it's not open source. The design is also patented, which (AFAIK) means it's illegal to make this printer without their permission.

I would have much preferred CERN-OHL-S, which explicitly gives you patent rights.

"Open" LLM models are almost never Open Source.

They are "Open Weights." This means the company allows you to run the model, but you have no right to see how it was made or what data it was trained on.

We need to stop letting companies redefine "Open Source" to mean "available for download." Words have meanings.

If a company claims they are open source but plans to "someday" release the code, or hides the training data, they are a poser. This is "Open Washing." They are co-opting the term to earn the community's goodwill for marketing without actually respecting the four freedoms.

First it's important to note that over years I realized that #OSI is just a corporate (and US-led) gatekeeper organization that serve the very interests their sponsors.
You can easily see this reading their license review mailing while keeping a tab opened on the sponsors page of the day through the #WaybackMachine.
Just as a couple of example, they rejected #MongoDB's #SSPL while #Amazon was their major sponsor and adopted CAL that was way more contentious.

The last damage that OSI did to our communities has been the #Meta dictated #OSAID (OpenSource #AI Definition) better known as #OpenWashing Definition, that superseed the #OSD and does not require training data sharing, voiding the freedom to study and welcoming toxic candies within "open source" just to avoid the #AIAct requirements.

So I don't care about OSI opinion about the #HackingLicense (or about anything else).

Having said that, you are right that its first condition forbid any use of the covered work that would limit third party access or use of it.

So basically you can't use your freedom to limit the freedom of others.

Is it still a free license?
Never asked to #RMS or #FSF, but I guess that such formal constraint makes it "not free" to their eyes.

What they miss, imho, is that freedom without communion is always going to be exploited by the strongers (under #capitalism, the rich) to oppress the weakest (everybody else, the workers, the customers, the environment...) as #LLM are showing these days.

In fact the latest version of the #HackingLicense was written in response ti #GitHub #Copilot (aka #CopyALot), after it distributed #GPLv3 code from #Quake with a wrong attribution and a permissive license.

The Hacking License is a dependency inversion: if you use data or code covered by it, anything that come out can be used under such license.

Kritische Anmerkung anlässlich des #DUTgemacht #DIDit heute:

Kein Wechselcafé, keine euch helfende Person, keine Empfehlungsseite befreit euch davor, nach wie vor jeden einzelnen Dienst vor der Nutzung kritisch unter die Lupe zu nehmen.

Etwa nur weil ein Dienst in Europa angesiedelt oder gehostet ist, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass dieser deswegen vertrauenswürdiger ist, die DSGVO respektiert, nicht trackt, nicht Daten verkauft, nicht eine Abhängigkeit aufbauen will, nicht seine Beschäftigten ausbeutet, nicht den Planeten schädigt usw.

Genauso ist es möglich, dass ein Dienst auf fragwürdige Drittanbieter zurückgreift und damit #BigTech wieder über die Hintertür hinein lässt. Auch nicht alles ist wirklich "open", was sich #OpenSource nennt, Stichwort: #Openwashing (https://media.ccc.de/v/clt25-173-openwashing-ans-licht). Und auch bei Anbietern, die offensiv mit Privatsphäre/Datensparsamkeit/"digitaler Souveränität" werben, sich aber gleichzeitig als "Lösung für alles" verkaufen, wäre ich vorsichtig, denn: Never put all eggs in one basket.

Übrigens: Auch die Erstellenden einiger Umstiegs-Websites sind nicht frei von Eigennutz und bevorzugen bestimmte Alternativen, haben Sponsoren oder versehen Links mit Werbe-IDs (sog. Affiliate-Links), woran sie Geld verdienen. Aus diesem Grund kommt man mE auch nicht umhin, sich anzusehen, wer die genannten Websites betreibt und aus welchen Motiven.

Eine investigative Recherche von @heiseonline wäre hier Mega-interessant!

Da #OpenSource global ist, deutet eine Eingrenzung auf den Westen imo schon eine Fehlstellung an, die uns Kunden und Community entmündigt und den Wettbewerb behindert.

Im B2B-Bereich haben chinesische Unternehmen ein intrinsisches Interesse an #FOSS, auch wegen der Diskriminierung durch die #USA.

Bureaukrater både i EU og DK ser jo på verden top-down og #opensource tænker jo bottom-up - men hvis bureaukrater og politikere begynder at forstå det kæmpe arbejde - på en mere fornuftig måde - end deres tidligere tilgang - med at se verden i produkter - så er det et fremskridt.

Men der er jo altid en risiko for at magtfulde lobbyister forsøger at få indflydelse - eller forsøge at lave #openwashing af deres produkter
