Night engineer at work.

Spotted orb-weaver (Neoscona crucifera) centered in her freshly spun web — radial lines under tension, spiral threads catching porch-light insects.

Midwest late-summer architecture, built nightly.

cernunnosfoundation.com/nature

Close-up nighttime photograph of a female Hentz orb-weaver spider (Neoscona crucifera) sitting at the exact center of her circular web.

The background is completely black, making the web’s geometry highly visible. Thin silk strands radiate outward from the spider like spokes on a wheel, connected by a near-perfect spiral of capture threads.

The spider’s body is rounded and tan with a pale leaf-shaped marking (called a folium) centered on her abdomen. Her legs are banded in light and dark segments, with noticeable reddish upper leg sections (femurs). She faces outward, legs slightly extended, positioned in the hub of the web where vibrations from prey would travel along the radial threads.

The flash highlights both the spider’s textured abdomen and the fine tension lines of the silk, emphasizing the precise symmetry of the orb structure.

This species is common in central Indiana and much of the eastern United States, building large vertical webs at dusk and often rebuilding them nightly.

A couple of backyard spiders. It always amazes me how much detail we miss with our eyes compared to a macro photo

I'm going to try to make #WebWeaverWednesday a thing, starting with this photo of a chonky #EuropeanGardenSpider (in our decidedly non-European #Portland backyard).

A brown and tan spider with a chonky patterned thorax with little pale circles on a reddish background and spiky striped legs, sitting on a web next to the wall of a green house.

Bug season has mostly ended, and finals are upon me, but at least there’s still spiders and carbs. Art is my own.
