Sigh.

Opened this one up and immediately got fed up. I'm 95% certain I'm hunting for a bad capacitor on the neckboard (convergence issues, but they get better as the set warms up). But on top of that there's a new humming/crackling noise coming from somewhere (maybe a transformer?) so now I'm chasing two issues.

Also the batteries in my ESR meter are dead.

Grumble grumble grumble

A Samsung CRT, with the back cover removed. The tube, neck board, and main boards are all visibile and dangerously exposed (yay hi voltage). This is a fairly unique set circa 2005 which supports digital (HDMI) inputs, and also features a native 16:9 aspect ratio and a super-thin tube design (about half the depth of most 32" CRTs). I really want to fix it but it's being a pain in the posterior.

Grabbed a #Lenovo #Ideapad C330 (#Chromebook) from my local #ewaste facility, looking to log into certain #Google Workspace accounts without providing a footprint on an actual #PC. And in the future when no longer supported install #Debian on it.
Also: this Chromebook folds to a tablet.

Unfortunately, the battery never fully charges: solid red for a few hours, then blinking red LED. I can get it to boot, but it will stay on for just a few minutes and then dies. Leaving it charging overnight, I was able to get logged in and started the upgrade for #ChromeOS 105.0.5195.134 (32 Bit), got the reboot and then it died. Left it unplugged, and there is no juice at all.
I found replacement batteries for $5 and up on #ebay, $10 plus shipping on gotlaptopparts.com, and stupid prices elsewhere. My concern is that it is not the battery but the circuits that managing charging the battery (which I would consider beyond repair and take back to eddies).

Via cros.tech/device/maple/ it looks as this Chromebook will support ChromeOS 143.0.7499.46, so there should still be some life in this device if the power issue is addressed.

Anything I’m missing here/not considering? Worth getting that cheap assed ebay battery and giving it a try?

Here are some additional furniture pieces made from the same wood. The goal was to create all the pieces in a consistent style.

I also made a pendent from a sanded down broken shard of the record.

Smoothed down it kinda feels like bone.

So I just spent too long on this. I traced a coster on an old record and (painstakingly) cut it out with pliers. I then sanded it.

Be honest... how'd it look?

It's kinda giving slate coster vibes? ?

Another weird frankenputer is coming together!

A mutual friend gave most of this to my partner, who passed it to me. Chassis, liquid-cooled Intel 5390k and 32GB of DDR4 RAM; I added another 16GB of RAM and two GPUs (AMD 550 and an HD 4790).

I need to dig up some sort of storage (I have one M2 slot or *TEN* SATA ports on the motherboard) and I'll have to hunt down a PSU with cables that are long enough to stretch across this absurdly huge case. But once that's done I might use this for emulating older games on my CRT TVs (I have DVI out for my Trinitron and S Video out for most of my other sets). I had an old Dell I was planning to use for that purpose, but Mint seems to recognize both GPUs so if I can swap between outputs easily this might work nicely!

#upcycle #computer #LinuxMint #hardware #project #emulation

A huuuge old gaming PC case, with the side panel removed. It's currently functional (although powered off) yet the case is so gigantic the parts barely take up any space inside. It was definitely a nice PC ten years ago, but now it's just a step away from e-waste. Don't worry though, I'll do something neat with it!

Helped our friend who just had back surgery take a load of trash to the dump (partner drove, I did the lifting/hauling bit). Even got a free beer out of the deal.

Anyway, guess who found a 27" Sony Trinitron at the dump?? It's a KV-27FS120, and was a little soggy but not soaked. Here's hoping I can get this one fixed up to sell!

A Sony CRT television, resting in the back seat of a grey pickup truck. The set is a little dirty as it was just rescued from the dump.

Another day, another truck snagged only inches away from the junkyard.

The front upper control arms for these are unobtainium, and the PO damaged one when a ball joint popped out (yikes). They tried swapping in the UCA from the 2WD variant but they're not interchangeable (you can see how weird that front wheel looks even in the picture).

Good news is that no major damage was done, but oh MAN do I have a project ahead of me. I think this truck will get the 5.2 V8 and upgraded suspension that's in the garage, and I'll put this truck's 3.9 V6 and the complete exhaust in my 94 Dakota.

So basically two partial drivetrain swaps next summer, whee.

#project #upcycle #diy #repair #truck

A red and weathered 1996 Dakota, parked in a yard. The truck is in pretty good shape for being around 30 years old, but it does need quite a bit of attention. Especially noticable is the front driver's side wheel, which is tilted aggressively outward at the top due to incorrect suspension components being used by the previous owner.

Never throw away old wood 🪵. You can still turn it into useful furniture 📐. I got some pieces of 40-year-old wood from a farmer and turned them into a shoe rack 👞.

The challenge was to use hand tools as much as possible during the project.

Before/after of my latest dollar store hack. I have wanted a little desktop fountain for ages. Nice ones are expensive. Cheap ones look cheap. But for $4, it was hard not to pick up this cheap dollar store fountain to mess around with. Especially when I am also currently playing with this new wood filament for use in Christmas presents.

I wanted something organic and outdoorsy to have on my desk next to my computer, especially as we move into winter. Warm it all up a bit. Maintain a little more connection to the natural world while I'm in the office more. And I never feel more connected to the environment than when I'm soloing a canoe.

Of course, this is dressed up like a straight cedar-strip canoe, whereas my family has always paddled cedar-and-canvas, but it still captures the vibe. A cedar canoe, a cherry paddle, and a moment captured at the water's edge after hopping up on the rocks to go exploring.

I dislike working with gold leaf. A lot. But it is really hard to argue with the results.

I really like how this wood filament takes stain, how it sands, and how I can get it to suggest a bit of grain with the application of some low-grit sandpaper and a bit of creative staining.

I don't think I'm quite done, but I am quite happy.

A cheap-looking plastic fountain. It has a very fake-looking plastic succulent growing out of it.The fountain sports warm wooden siding, shining gold accents, and a real air plant. It has been painted and textured to look like rocks, and a glossy miniature cedar-strip canoe sits upside down on the rocks. A paddle lies across the canoe's keel. The fountain, again, but the canoe is turned right-side up, with the paddle sitting against the thwart.
