A pair of mated swans face each other while swimming on a lake just after sunset, with other swans in the distance and an evergreen forest at the horizon. The viewer is in the position of a writer holding a quill pen and writing the line "Did she put on his knowledge with his power?" The writer is seated between two Ionic columns. Purple irises bloom on the shore, with a Greek wine jug standing in front of them and another similar jug tipped over, spilling wine to stain the grass and stones at the writer's feet. Pegasus is flying in the upper right corner of the image, appearing as if about to join the swans at the farther side of the lake.

A woman in a green dress sleeps on a green bed in a grey stone castle room, her long blonde hair draped down to her feet. There are the remnants of a lace canopy overhead, with lavender roses climbing all along the wooden frame and along the floor where a Russian blue cat sleeps. The dreaming woman's hand gently caresses the cat. Above her head is her dream of a great honeycomb with two honey bees and a golden drop of honey threatening to come down upon the sleeper. In the gothic arched window a golden eagle has landed with wings still raised and gazes upon the sleeping woman. Between the eagle's wings can be seen a starry midnight sky and the waning crescent Moon.

February 23 - the birthday of British Symbolist painter George Frederic Watts (1817-1904). Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as Hope and Love and Life. These paintings were intended to form part of an epic symbolic cycle called the "House of Life", in which the emotions and aspirations of life would all be represented in a universal symbolic language.

Hope (1886).
In the Bible (Hebrews, 6:19), hope is 'an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.' Here, Hope is blindfolded, seated on a globe, and playing a lyre of which all but one of the strings are broken. Watts wanted to find an original approach to allegory on universal themes. But Hope's attempts to make music appear futile and several critics argued that the work might have been more appropriately titled Despair. Watts explained that 'Hope need not mean expectancy. It suggests here rather the music which can come from the remaining chord'.

Young Girl in the Grounds of an Abbey (Solitude) by Louis Welden Hawkins (English artist, lived 1849-1910). Or should I say "English/French", the artist moved to France and took French nationality.

The Chariot of Apollo and the Dragon (1907) by French #Symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840-1916).
Odilon Redon often returned to the ancient myth of Apollo in his sun chariot with the writhing coils of a snake below, revealing the pervasive influence of Eugene Delacroix. But Redon infuses his rendering of the subject with an air of dreamlike calm, in keeping with his preference in his mature works to maintain a sense of ambiguity.

The scene here depicted shows Apollo in the midst of his first heroic act, slaying Python, the ancient son of Mother Earth Gaia who terrorized the lands surrounding his lair in Mount Parnassus. In honor of this victory, he instituted the Pythian Games.

Silence (1911) by French #Symbolist artist Odilon Redon.
Discussing the imagery and theme of #silence in Redon’s art, Richard Hobbs states: “Silence here is not associated with fear or pessimism but with the suggestion of reflective and #spiritual experience. Silence negates the intrusions of the contingent and objective world, giving rein to that undefined state of thoughtfulness that the idealist art of Redon seeks to provoke"

July 14 - the birthday of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) - an #Austrian #symbolist painter. Klimt was among the many European artists of his time who were inspired by cultural traditions from outside their own milieu. He lived in #Vienna, a crossroads of East and West, and he drew on sources such as Byzantine art, Mycenaean metalwork, Persian rugs and miniatures, the mosaics of the Ravenna churches, and Japanese screens.

In this allegoric representation of music the central figures are a robed woman holding a lyre and a sphinx on the right. A Silenus mask on the left is partially obscured by the contemplative woman. Music is one of his earliest paintings and was painted in the Jugendstil or youthful style of the Art Nouveau that was so popular in the late 19th century.

The Gothic Window (1900) is one of many images #French artist Odilon Redon painted of profile figures with flowers. The woman embodies his conception of #spiritual life and suggests a #meditative state often found in #Symbolist painting. Eastern schools of thought also influenced Redon, and the floating cluster of flowers may be intended as Buddhist symbols of pure spirit and beauty.

April 20 - the birthday of a French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon. Redon is best known today for the dreamlike paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were inspired by Japanese art and leaned toward abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to Surrealism.

Winter Night, Edvard Munch. Even though it’s from 1900-01 it still feels bold. I also really love Munch’s photography- lots of selfies - which is pretty eerie at times. #EdvardMunch #WinterNight #Oslo #Norway #Landscape #symbolist

Description taken from Daily Art app.

The landscape was an essential genre for Edvard Munch. In the years around the turn of the century, he created a number of landscapes with winter motifs from Nordstrand (a borough of the city of Oslo). In 1900 and 1901, the artist created a group of similar paintings with a view over the Oslo Fjord; in restrained colors, they mark the high point of Munch's Symbolist landscape painting. Exhibited with great success at the Vienna Secession in 1904, the painting was titled Winter Night. I love its colors and the trees painted in a quite decorative way. When I look at it, I almost feel the cold, winter air.
