@firefly @ai6yr Great. I used to feel lucky that my area is dominated by Lone Star ticks rather than Black-legged “Deer” ticks, the ones that carry Lyme Disease. Now I’m not so sure.

Anyway, always tuck your pants into your socks, used repellant, and check yourself afterwards if you venture into the tall grass. #ticks

If being vegetarian were to become the only way to address an increasing risk of dropping dead unexpectedly after eating #meat, I suspect we'd soon have a lot more vegetarians in society, with a corresponding drop in the #climate footprint of the food industry.

Would it be wrong to root for the #ticks? 🤔

Is meat-eating a deadly habit?

Could become one if you've been bit by a Lone Star tick, which can cause alpha-gal syndrome, making you allergic to mammalian flesh.

CDC estimates nearly half a million Americans may have the syndrome.

I wouldn't wish a lethal allergy on anyone. FYI, Japanese Barberry bushes provide homes for ticks and they are a popular item sold in the big hardware stores.

"The authors suggest the responses could indicate that people have a limited understanding of the types of outdoor activities that put people at risk for Lyme disease and discount the amount of risk associated with the outdoor areas they most frequently encounter, like their yards, which are one of the most common places to encounter ticks. It could also reflect an overestimation of how much time is needed to be at risk."

Just sprayed enough permethrin on next week's hiking clothes to kill an apocalyptic scorpion locust. I'll be deep in the woods of New Hampshire with all the biting things.

We never saw ticks when I was growing up in the area, even with playing in the woods regularly. Thanks to climate change, ticks are now everywhere. And very hungry. #NewEngland #Ticks

Seven #Ticks Hitched Very Long Rides to #Connecticut
Nonnative species from #Europe, #LatinAmerica and Eastern #Africa reached the #US by latching on to travelers, offering clues about how ticks spread in a warming world.
"Main finding is that we are facing an increasing risk of invasive ticks in the United States,” said Goudarz Molaei, author and #entomologist. He added rate of unintentional introductions of nonnative species appears to be rising

The tick is approximately the same size as a fat chihuahua.

Poor #Platon can't catch a break. Today for the second time this year he somehow got into a nest of ticks.
The tick collar seems to work now*, as the ticks fall off him without sucking any blood first, but there are so many. The picture just shows what came out from about 10 minutes of scratching, but I'm walking behind him with the vacuum cleaner for about two hours now, and every time he moves, he still leaves a trail of dying ticks.

*Last time I noticed the days after the incident and picked about 10 grape-sized ticks off him.

Because life wasn't worrisome enough already, I may have accidentally just scratched an embedded #ticks off my finger. I noticed a dark spot yesterday, so it has probably been there for at least a day. And no, I didn't save it. Yes, I'm now trying not to panic. 😳😳😳

@anakin78z Yes. I think there are 8 endemic and 3 introduced species. Galapagos tortoises seem to have 4 ticks. Some of the species go after lizards, others birds. Link is to genus that has 3 members that attack tortoises. #ticks #inaturalist #galapagos inaturalist.org/observations/3
